It's ~$30 on Amazon [US] right now and has been for a while which is the lowest price ever for it so I dunno what/where makes it expensive. The game also includes two mini-expansions [HQ&Recon which is the version you want as linked above] which adds buildings and objectives to it.

The rulebook is okay but it does the "sidebar" for further explanations on certain cards/rules which is annoying.

I like it over other deckbuilders because the theme is great [dark as well considering there is a cannibal tribe] and it's competitive with not too much "take-that". My favorite part is the added decision-making aspect of the "contested resources" deck which has mostly powerful cards [some are better than others] to fight over each round which you can't "buy" from the market.

It's only $30 w/ expansions included, make sure you're looking at the right listings as there are a few versions:

For what it's worth I don't like the game and am trying to get rid of it. Just wasn't all that fun the few times we tried playing it. I generally like deck building.

Arctic Scavengers is a game I like a lot. It plays well with 2 players but I prefer it with 3-4. Depending on what you didn't like about Dominion, you may find the theme and skirmish phase more interesting. The game + all expansions was recently reprinted and is sold on Amazon.

You also might want to try a search on /r/boardgames - deckbuilders are a popular game type and there's plenty of discussion and suggestions to peruse. After a quick look, it seems Valley of the Kings is a common recommendation, although I haven't tried it.

Arctic Scavengers with Recon Expansion is only $35.50 brand new on Amazon.

Arctic Scavengers! Not under $30, but it's only cards and fits the theme of your trip pretty well!

edit: amazon has it, with both expansions for $31!

I'm thinking you just take the cards for the base game, and not include RECON or HQ.
