Go to a Pentium G CPU. I'd try the new Skylake ones, as they have a beefy GPU that can work with some h265 if you need it to. The tried-and-true G3258 would be fine, though.

I think you're overbuying. This thing is going to be big, loud and power hungry. I'd ditch all but one of the 2tb drives. Add more when you need more. You may find you don't. My four-year-old HTPC is still running a 2tb WD Black and I'm fine with that. But I also don't archive whole seasons of TV shows I've already seen. I let Netflix do that for me and so could you. I only store episodes I haven't seen and movies that I haven't seen or that have personal value to me. (ie. Wars and Trek)

You don't have to have an SSD. Remember, you're not rebooting this machine often and you're not switching applications around much. I've built with SSDs, I've built with mechanical drives and I've built with Seagate hybrid hard drives. Having done all three, it's the Seagate Hybrid all the way. It boots in <10 seconds and you still get 2 or 4 tb of storage without taking up space in the case and room in the budget.

How cheap, and do you need a certain form factor? the MSI H97I AC
was fantastic for Mini ITX builds, but was about a hundred dollars. if you want something cheaper the Asrock H97 Anniversary was about $70 bucks on amazon. give me an idea of how much you want to spend and the form factor.

So I'm currently looking for a new motherboard under $200. I need something big enough to put a sound card, wifi adapter, and still fit my GPU.




I don't know a whole lot about how to properly match a motherboard with the components (I had a friend help me built it.) I would like some help knowing how to pick the right one please.

303 pounds total. If you order a used drive from Webuy you're about as likely to get a 5400rpm drive from a crappy brand with 100,000 spin hours on it as a good desktop drive. A brand new 7200rpm drive from a reputable manufacturer is 36 pounds, a used one is silly.

Hmm so you're on the 1150 socket which means new motherboards are getting a bit uncommon. Your current CPU is locked so you can probably go with a H97 chipset motherboard if you don't plan on upgrading to a overclockable i7 CPU on that platform (I wouldn't). For PSU it depends on what you're planning in terms of GPU upgrades but I'd just get a good quality 550W or maybe 650W with a long warranty like EVGA G2/G3.

If you're looking to do other upgrades it's probably time do switch platforms and go with a Ryzen build or maybe Intels Coffee lake which is releasing in a few months.

I bought this guy to keep it cheap. It's good but I really wouldn't recommend it as the PCI-E slot is only 2.0)
