I'd also recommend taking a look at the new Asus T100. Do not limit yourself to the Surface RT and see if you might need full windows. Like Surface RT, the Asus T100 comes with microsoft office as well. In addition it comes WITH a keyboard dock, which is another plus. Did I mention that the price is 400 dollars for the 64gig version?

Highly recommend this tablet over the Surface RT

Amazon is out of stock ;(, I'm not sure if you'd like 3rd party sellers

How about a Windows Transformer?
It comes pre-installed with Office, as well.

u/CyberJeeves · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The Asus Transformer Book T100TA is a very good value at $400. It comes with MS Office preinstalled, thereby providing additional savings too. The T100TA has a detachable 10.1" 1366x768 IPS screen that can be used as a tablet, 2GB ram, 64GB SSD storage and an Intel Baytrail Z3740 processor.

I am looking for almost the exact same thing; a cheap, light laptop to do some coding on. However my price range is a little lower, since it will be exclusively for travel-purposes, and I don't want to be toting around a really expensive computer for that. However, last I checked (about 6 months ago), I was torn between these:

Asus Transformer Book; don't remember the exact model, the one with W8, might have been this one: http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T100TA-C1-GR-10-1-Inch-Detachable-Touchscreen/dp/B00FFJ0HUE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396562876&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+transformer+book

Asus Vivobook http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msca/en_CA/pdp/Asus-X202E-11.6-inch-Notebook-English/productID.288021500

I would have gone with the former, however I have an original Asus Transformer Android tablet and was extremely unimpressed with the keyboard dock, and from the reviews I saw it sounds like the Transformer book may not have improved it much.

As for the latter, I saw some reviews on Newegg about it throttling performance greatly under load and/or heat.

My perfect laptop for this purpose would really be a MacBook Air, but those are exorbitantly expensive.

I am still looking. Will be keeping tabs on this thread to see others' suggestions.

I think you're looking for the ASUS T100TA.

It's under budget, can be a laptop when detached from the base, has great battery life, and is an ASUS product. I've played around with one and almost bought one for the female.

u/SecretSnake2300 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Ohhh shit dawg, buying the Lenovo G505s and the Asus t100 which only comes to a little over $800. That G505s processor is really discounted.

u/je7ome · 2 pointsr/Surface

I have a Surface RT, which is great. It runs Office reasonably, but it is quite slow doing most other things, including web browsing, unfortunately. The 2 is much faster, and is definitely worth the extra money. If you're leery of the cost, you could try something like this as a compromise (it's Windows 8 rather than RT, so it'll run normal programs too): http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T100TA-C1-GR-10-1-Inch-Detachable-Touchscreen/dp/B00FFJ0HUE

Well, almost anything will do word processing. I use a core 2 duo laptop, and it still handles well, probably due to the SSD. It might be better than some of the newer budget laptops. lol

New laptops are slow probably due to all the bloatware already installed. Also, they have a slower hard drive. Maybe due to less heat, or its cheaper. I'm not sure.

I've heard some Chromebooks are nice, but they are very limited in capability.

There are some with touchscreens. Gimmicky, in my opinion, but I suppose it is sometimes useful.

Some double as tablets,

Pulling off the top of Amazon, I found these.

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-20B20011US-15-6-Inch-Laptop/dp/B00FU83YWS/

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Satellite-C55-A5245-15-6-Inch-Horizon/dp/B00D78PZE8/

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Windows-Pentium-15-6-Inch-59410452/dp/B00HEYVAN6/

They all look decent.

You can do what I did and get a cheap refurbished laptop and upgrade it, but not many laptops these days are that modular.

Sorry if this post is a bit rambly.

u/manormortal · 2 pointsr/windows

if you can add $50 + tax then the Asus T100 might be worth looking at. Its as powerful as the venue 8 pro but has a bigger screen,, longer battery life, and comes with a keyboard/trackpad, usb 3.0, and an hdmi port.

u/just_the_wave · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

When I say cheap i mean like cheap cheap cheap. looking for something ~200$. I've looked around a little and came across this: http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-T100-10-Inch-Laptop-gray/dp/B00FFJ0HUE

You guys think this fits my needs? Also considering buying a used thinkpad if I can find one in my pricerange

u/brainwithnopurpose · 2 pointsr/amazone

Here is what I have: t100 $348/prime

Full Windows 8 (not RT), quad core, so anything windows works. comes with full latest ms office suite. screen/keyboard combo make for a great laptop that's portable and useful. hdmi out, 2 usb ports, sd card slot for expandable memory.

This version has 500 gb drive that comes in the keyboard.

I haven't had a problem on mine. I'll send a link. I was more joking because I wouldn't be interested in adding any cash, but here's the link.

Functionality wise it has worked flawlessly for me.

I'm going to chime in with a completely different answer to your question, but a path that I took may be similar to what you need.

I'm a physics student and I use my combination for programming, taking notes, and a bunch of other things.

I bought my laptop, a Lenovo G500 for $330 from Staples during a massive sale that they had. I also put a big coupon on top of it, which is why I got such a good deal. I wanted a computer with an SSD, so I bought this adapter and took out my CD drive. I don't miss the CD drive at all, and I love having an SSD in my laptop. Mind you, I don't do any really hardcore gaming, so I don't worry about my lack of a graphics card. I can play Titanfall on it, though. All told, I'm in about $450 or less on my laptop.

I also bought an Asus Transformer Book. This one I got on sale from the Microsoft Store for about $350 (and they gave me an extra 10% off because I'm a student). I bought a stylus with this, too. I'm planning on acquiring a big microSD when I need more space, but I'm not really close to filling it yet, since I really only use it for productivity purposes.

It's not all wrapped up into one device, but I've got a good laptop and a laptop/tablet hybrid that enables me to take notes of everything I need (including on the fly equations) with relative ease. I've been a google fanboy for years, but transitioning to a Windows tablet was the right decision for me, because I plug this thing into all sorts of physics equipment that only has Windows drivers and software. I suppose I could go fancy and install a Linux OS on the tablet, but I don't really need it on there and that would definitely mess with my storage space.

This option works brilliantly for me, but it may be completely wrong for you. I'm just saying you want to keep your options open and look for deals. I got into my setup for about $800.

One other thing; get a touchscreen if you can. Windows 8.1 works very well with a touchscreen and you may find yourself liking the Metro interface if you have that option. I have it on my tablet, but not on my laptop and I wish I had it on both.

u/binnen97 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

>You could get an ASUS T100TA which doubles as a laptop and a tablet, and then get a Lenovo G505s for light gaming. The G505s is the best budget gaming rig around due to its AMD APU which gives it a graphical leg up over the Intel equivalent.

>Total would come out to around $880

What kind of performance can I expect from them?

u/poohnds · 1 pointr/windows8

64 GB is as big as it'll take. You might want to buy the 64 GB version of the transformer if your budget can handle it. I just bought one myself, but stuck to the 32 GB one due to budget constraints. After installing Office and VLC, I'm down to 10 GB free. I don't tend to keep media on my PC though so its not a deal breaker, for me anyways.

I've typed a bunch on it at this point and have had no real problems with the keyboard. If you can touch type, you'll get used to it. You might want to spring for a wireless mouse for situations where you have the space. As mentioned, the right click on the touch pad is pretty loud.

I would also advise you to follow the instructions on this amazon review.

This may be completely not what you're looking for, but my younger brother recently got a transformer and it seems pretty solid for the price. It has Windows 8 and touch (obviously as it's also a tablet) which would be a huge plus for you working on it for school. As for gaming, I don't think it will be able to handle some larger games like Dota but it should run Minecraft well enough. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't buy the standard "Surface" models for anything, whether it be gaming or media consumption as ARM and Windows really doesn't make any sense together at this point.

The Surface Pro 3 is a very nice high-end tablet that can also serve as an ultrabook replacement (it essentially is an ultrabook with a detachable keyboard) it can a fairly wide variety of game (Source games, Civ5, basically any indie game, any tablet game in the Windows Store and essentially anything else you'd expect to be playable on a laptop)

The games you mentioned would actually run fine on something like a Dell Venue Pro which cost about $200, if you want something larger go for the ASUS Transformer Book priced under $400 with a detachable keyboard dock.

tl;dr don't buy any sort of Windows tablet with an ARM processor. If you want something cheap, go with an inexpensive x86 based tablet (usually running Intel's Bay-Trail Atom CPUs), otherwise the Surface Pro 3 is about the best and most powerful Windows tablet but it's also very expensive.

I love the Asus T100. Pretty cheap (bought it used), and it has a detachable keyboard. Got mine for $100, and it's perfect for powerpoint and eBooks. Runs Win 10.

The only dock is a powered desktop dock: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&sku=331-9711

I believe the only thing you're going to find like that is going to be in the form of a hard keyboard base, like the ones available for the Venue 11 or ASUS T100. the plus side of the ASUS is that it comes with the keyboard dock/base by default, whereas it's often an option for other tablets at the same price level. (~$349)

If that is the extent of what you're doing, then yeah, you'll be just fine with a Chromebook. Chromebooks make for great internet machines, and not a whole lot else.

This is a great resource for figuring out what to use when there's a specific thing you want to do.

I honestly don't know much about the Asus Transformer, but a quick look tells me that this is running Windows 8. It looks like there are other versions that are running some form of Android/Windows8 hybrid thing, but I can't be bothered to figure out what's what.

If this was a decision I was going to make, I would go with the Asus Transformer, or some other similar Win8 tablet thing. It's going to allow you a much wider range things you can do with it, and Chromebooks are quite limited AFAIK. Unless the Chromebooks have expanded to allow a whole ton more programs/'apps', you are somewhat limited choices.

It's also worth noting that I believe (don't quote me on this) that some people have had success in installing a couple different Linux builds, but that was quite some time ago, and I don't know how far that whole scene has progressed.
