Try a star wars bandai kit.
They fit well and are not the snap kits from his generation.
There aren't many of the same type. But there are numerous knock-off lego sets that are more military themed (LEGO Group generally speaking has a policy against military subjects with limited exceptions such as a few jet planes here or there, and what else you see is third party designs).
Meng have made new generation snap fit kits that, again, are not like the old snap fit kits.

Revell Germany also might make something. Unfortunately, what you're looking for is fairly uncommon because typically (excepting the Mustang and Bandai's star wars models) they're traditionally targeted at beginners.

Bandai recently secured the rights for the Disney Star Wars IP to release SW model kits. They are very good, easy to build and are relatively cheap.

I got it at a local model shop for 30$ (however its cheaper on amazon, I just like to support my local hobby store)

If your okay with Star Wars the Bandai kits are the best of both worlds for being incredibly beginner friendly and also amazingly detailed. Most of the 1/72 kits are in the 25 dollar range and the 1/144 kits are half that. They don't actually require glue as they are designed to fit together very nicely and tight enough to not need it. You can paint them as well but most of them have colored plastic (for the 1/72s) and stickers if your not comfortable with fully painting something.
My personal favorite of theirs is the Star Destroyer / Super Star Destroyer combo that was released recently. The X-Wing is a classic as well.
