In any case, I feel that the obvious parallels between known conflicts in Rogue One was to impart recognizability, not to draw direct analogies. The helmets of Cassian's Alliance soldiers were very obviously American M1 helmets, instantly recognizable from any WWII- / Vietnam-era war film. Many wore Russian BDU winter uniforms. I suspect that these were more aesthetic decisions than metaphoric ones.
