This is what you need. The hold flame on wood method works perfectly fine if you have enough heat. Trust me, I was a Boy Scout.

If you're going the old fashioned way dryer lint makes a really good starter. And a good rule with the kindling is always have 3-4x as much as you think you'll need. When I taught fire building the people that had trouble getting a fire going usually ran out.
