This is definitely something an amateur can attempt. I just had a tiny bit of experience helping my dad build a much simpler boat, and no real woodworking experience of my own when I started, so it's definitely doable. Just take is slowly, step-by-step, puzzle through it logically, and you'll be fine.

If you're truly interested, read this book and lurk on the Glen-L forum. You'll find there's a lot of people trying this for the first time.
