I, too, have a "broken" back - herniated/dessicated discs in the L4/L5 area, and also stenosis of the C4/C5 discs. Not fun.

I've spent years going to chiropractors, because I also don't want surgery. Some have been helpful, some not as much. I was going to one in NYC 3 times a week at one point, and that helped...but I still wasn't great.

I did two things, however, that did help a lot. I signed up for tae kwon do classes, and stuck with them for the 3.5 years it took to get my black belt. All that stretching helped immensely - on top of that, I dropped over 100 pounds, which also helped immensely. I also got an inversion table.

The table is by, far, and away the very best thing I've done for my back. I hang for 4-5 minutes a day, and that's all it takes. It's not an instant fix, but over time it does make a huge difference. From time to time, the sciatica will be so bad that I can't tie my shoes - hang upside down for 5 minutes, and then it's not a problem any more.

Even if you can't get to a full 180 degree inversion, it can help. I've gotten to the point where when I hang, it's literally by my ankles - I don't have any other contact with the table. It can be a bit disconcerting at first - I tend to get a pressure in my jaw that can take a minute or two to go away, but it is absolutely worth sticking to.

Thanks, for the ideas guys, I also went ahead and purchased an inversion table also to try and help stretch before I go work out. It was fairly cheap on amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O2SRGM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
