You only want laser because they will last years.
Brother ones are also really good.
Nothing else is really going to beat them on price either: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MFG57ZK
100 bucks for a laser printer copier that connects to your computer over wifi.

Laser printers are the best, they basically just sit there sleeping and any time you print, they warm up and print. You never have to worry about ink drying out.

Pretty decent deal for a laser printer with scanner, disappointing that the networking is wireless only though.

For those who need an ethernet port (and also an autofeeder for the scanner) this is $10 more.

This has kind of been beat to death both here and on TLS.

Use whatever platform you like best - Word, the Internet, and whatever exam software your school uses will work on both. I like my Macbook. I have a nice 15" Macbook Pro already, but it's a bit big for most people. I'll probably go for a 13" next time I buy. Here's where to go to find the best prices. Here's the gist of it:

  • Retina Macbook Pro 13" for $1199 is a solid choice.
  • 12" Macbook for $1299 is nice if you really want the lightest one possible, but the Macbook Pro model is much, much faster.
  • The old Macbook Air is the budget option at $899. The screen sucks - and you'll be staring at it a lot. Don't buy this.

If you like Windows, get a nicer windows laptop (spend at least $750, and get a business grade laptop). Here's a decent one.

  • Dell XPS 13

    Other tips:

  • Don't buy a Chromebook, Netbook, or $350 laptop. They won't cut it.
  • Don't buy Microsoft Office without checking with your school. Most give it away for free.
  • If you want a printer, get this one. Cheap to run, and generic toner is like $20.

Mild brand loyalty, but I'd suggest a Brother printer. One here should meet all your requirements. Can't speak for this model specifically, but I've been rocking one with a flat bed scanner for 4 years now, never a single issue. Those high yield cartridges last like a year as well.

Heh. I swear printing shipping labels is the only reason I fire up my printer nowadays. That or tickets/boarding passes/etc.. But so often now you can just flash your smart phone in front of a bar code reader.

That reminds me. I need a new printer. My existing printer works great (Brother makes the best devices) but now I want a new one that can do google cloud printing (and other new fancy printing from smart phones and tablets and whatnot)

Not bad for 100 bucks.

Just putting it out there, but maybe a wireless router is a better gift? Would make their life easier if they're not decided on a wired network/connection at home.
An Airport Express is cool at $99 for an apartment or small home. Will give wireless network capabilities, wireless music playing with plugged in speaker (optional) via AirPlay. Just a thought!
OR maybe a cheapy $20-40 router AND the printer!
Funny, I just bought the 3-in-1 Brother DCPL2540DW (http://www.amazon.com/Brother-DCPL2540DW-Wireless-Compact-Printer/dp/B00MFG57ZK) and it's amazing! It supports AirPrint, Google Cloud print, wireless scanning from flatbed OR multi-feeder. Set it up last night and loving it!

I just sold my HP m1212nf on craigslist. I got it to work in Linux (Arch & Ubuntu) but it was a pain. If my wife ever printed, it would kill all other clients, and have to be restarted. Scanning was hit or miss as to whether the app (Simple Scan) would find the scanner.

I sold it because there was a deal on the Brother DCP-L2540DW that brought it down to something like $80. It has a few better functions, and setting it up with Linux was a breeze (including Google Cloud Print for my wife's Chromebook).

The PSU looks grim @ just 450W but the GPU only requires 75W so it should technically work. Always keep in mind that after a year, the PSU might not be as efficient as the day you assembled the PC. Also, I paid 9$ for a L2540DW printer yesterday and altough it's obvious this is a pricing mistake, I received the Amazon shipping confirmation email today lol https://www.amazon.ca/gp/offer-listing/B00MFG57ZK/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

Which printer? DCP-L2540DW or HL-L2340DW or HL-3170CDW?

DCP-L2540DW
HL-L2340DW
HL-3170CDW

Hey, new here. Planning to buy a laser printer for school as I need to print essays, reports and such, and sometimes I need color so preferably I want a printer with color. I looked around reddit and amazon and found these three.

The DCP has a scanner and more ppm than the others, and is only $10 more than the L2340, but I'm not an expert and maybe there's a catch here. But other than that I can't really see the difference other than price.

I don't need multi-function but it can be nice when I need to photocopy stuff.

I have the Brother DCPL2540DW Wireless Compact Laser Printer. It's very similar to this, but with a document feeder. Everything, including Cloud Printing works great. I love it and recommend it.

We've been using the Brother dcp-l2540dw at work for a few years. Pretty reliable and fits your budget.

I would recommend this one: Brother DCP L2540DW printer

This one has a scanner and extremely cheap ink cartridge. It is also wifi enabled.

I appreciate the advice. I decided to go ahead an get a laser. I have had bad luck with HP's before, and I heard Brother was decent so I went with this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MFG57ZK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Wish me luck.

Doesn't even have to be on sale. My mom just got this one from Amazon for $130.

Well if you're really set on a MF printer, I'd recommend getting a Brother, I got a Brother inkjet a few years ago and the scanner still works without ink in it. I also got a HL-2270DW from work that they were going to throw out due to jamming but it's been fine for me, I'm a low quantity printer though, but my work has at least 3 other of the same model printers and just 1 was acting up and it's probably because it was the janitors' printer and well lets just say I'm not surprised their printer was acting up.

So if you really want a MF printer I'd check out http://www.amazon.com/Brother-DCPL2540DW-Wireless-Compact-Printer/dp/B00MFG57ZK/ it's $130 now (Lowest $89.99 (Nov 29, 2014) Highest $179.99 (Oct 21, 2014)) works with wireless/wired networking, stand alone copying. I haven't a clue if the scanner works when out of ink but my older Brother inkjet does so it's a decent possibility.

Also at least on their inkjet the super cheap ink works so they don't force you to pay for their official ink, I actually just replaced the toner on one of the 2270's at work with a non-offical toner cartridge and it worked fine.

GL in your search.

Well should I ever need to buy a printer I would get a brother. I have never had one, but since I infrequently print, laser would be better. I have never had issues with basic printing through usb in Ubuntu. The bonus functions are where it gets dicey; mfp needed hplip to work, deskjet needed hplip gone.

This might not be the best place to seek Linux support, but if you tell us what internets you will be printing we could pick an appropriate model.

Edit: This is what's been in my wishlist for a while.

Get the $168 model so you don't have to order the full size toner pack once your intro size goes away. Brother is great because they're affordable and their hardware isn't OEM tied. You can use aftermarket toner without issue. I personally run some electrical tape over the little window on each toner cartridge so the printer's laser thinks it's full. I do always keep a backup cartridge in case I do run out of toner, otherwise no low toner warnings.

If you need Cloud or Air print, then slightly different and or expensive models have it as a feature. Enjoy.

I'm happy with this one. Have had it for near a year now, only use it maybe once a month (more when I initially got it as I was job searching and printing out sheet music more often) nowadays though.

It stays on all the time, is connected by wifi. Have never had any of the not-quite-connected issues that my older HP inkjet was plagued by.

u/kiramis · 1 pointr/Ebay

Did you get an inkjet? That's why I recommended a laser printer. They are remarkably cheap now. I got my Brother DCPL2540DW laser printer on sale for $100 (note that this is basically the same price as one without a document feed which isn't that useful in general) about 6 months ago and still haven't replaced the cartridge which is about $50 if you buy a name brand one.
