DVI-I has both analog and digital pins, and can be converted to VGA with a simple cheap adapter (like the one you bought).

Your port is the all digital DVI-D port, which lacks the analog pins to convert directly to VGA.

Grab an HDMI to VGA converter on the cheap, should work just fine.

I recently bought one of these converters for a vga monitor. Linky It has an audio out port built in and all of the cables you need. But you will need an old school VGA plug on your monitor and a vga cable.

I doubt the USB speakers will work with the ouya, but maybe someone else has experience with this.

*RESPONSE: I tried it, and video and audio work 100% beautifully using the HDMI port on my 360 with a Cable Matters Active HDMI to VGA adapter, and a VGA cable AND a 1/8" stereo audio cable plugged into my TV. 1920x1080 auto-detected and it looks really good. That's a win.

I would suggest you go the other route on this one. When messing with power it's usually best to stick with approved or licensed products. If you have amazon prime you can easily return it. And if it does and you one day upgrade your monitor it won't be a bad thing to have around.(just make sure your monitor supports a resolution that it supports)

Use your existing setup and stick a hdmi to vga adapter before the laptop. Signal loss isn't really a concern since unless you're already experiencing it.

There's noticeable lag over straight VGA. Shitty that they dropped all analog support. CRTs are still the best displays for gaming by a wide margin. What's strange is I also have a HDMI to composite adapter for my CRT TV, and it has virtually no lag whatsoever. There might be an adapter out there for VGA that's lagless, but mine isn't one of them.

Your problem is you got a VGA to HDMI converter. What that means is the device connected on the VGA side is sending the video and the TV/monitor is on the HDMI side.

You need to go the opposite way, HDMI to VGA which I am unsure if it is possible, you will most likely need an active convertor (needs power).

Just an FYI, the difference in analog and digital matters but it really just means you need some kind of active converter. HDMI to VGA can be accomplished on a little dongle that pulls power right from the HDMI port, like this., and not that expensive.

Look into HDMI adapters, if you have an older tv without an hdmi hookup, you can use something like what I listed below. You lose some quality by changing to an older video format, but it does work.

If you have a PC already hooked up to your TV, look into using VNC to connect to your pi. You may need a screen to set it all up once, but after that you could connect and remotely access it no problem over your network.

You can get a converter powered from the HDMI, and you're probably going to have better luck if you search for HDMI to VGA instead of HDMI to D-sub. Here's one such adapter on amazon.

Thanks for your time in helping out. Been researching building a new PC and then ran into the problem of finding out new GPUS don't support VGA or normal DVI and adding in a new monitor to my budget would degrade the quality of the PC so was wondering a quick fix for now would be an adapter and new monitor later.

I currently am using one with the bluray player in my bedroom since I needed an HDMI port for my Amazon Fire TV stick. HDMI to VGA adapters like this are generally much cheaper than a component video adapter.

Personally, I'd get monitors that support HDMI or display port connections, but if you wanted to save money and keep your existing gear... I'd get different adapters than those expensive Digital to Analog adapters with a built in converter.

VGA is an analog signal. HDMI/DisplayPort and that DVI port is digital only. If you'll have to buy an adapter that doesn't just carry the connection, but also makes the conversion from digital to analog.

Where would I connect the two white and red cables? There is only one port in my monitor. Also, one of the other responders said that I should use this and I feel like that might just work but how would I be able to play the audio into my other pair of speakers instead of the built in ones?

You might be able to find a cheap, used, T-Series i3 which will be a great improvement in TDP and be a iGPU upgrade over both.

1366 x 768 display with only VGA? Ouch, you should really upgrade. If you insist though you'll need an HDMI to VGA adapter with audio like this. HDMI carries audio but VGA doesn't, so it'll need to split the two. Plug either your monitor audio (if it has internal speakers) or external speakers into the 3.5mm jack on the adapter.
