Sure thing! After watching other bot fights online my two main goals were:
1: Shut up. People don't want to hear my commentary on the fights.
2: Don't over-use the zoom and try to track the bots. Earlier in the tournament I found myself zooming too much and not catching a nice flip or someone got launched too quickly out of frame.

And while I was happy with the video quality I am honestly pretty disappointed with the audio. If you look at the bundle shot at the bottom you can see that one of the microphones is directly in front of the zoom control, and when you hold the camera your finger naturally covers it. That is why I am finding many of my videos sounded muted or like the sound passed through a wall first. I would try to catch myself when filming but must of the time I didn't remember until after the match started. Overall I'd give the camera 3.5-to-4/5 stars.
Heyo! A big part of my service has been doing video projects for promotion of events, NGOs, and other PCV projects. I've just got a handheld Canon camcorder.
Get yourself a wireless lapel mic kit, an extra battery, a camera bag, an SD card for increased memory, and a tripod before you head out. You can opt to spend big money of these things, but I reccomend starting economically and growing your kit over the years.
My PC computer is pretty low end, so I run VideoPad for all the editing.
This is the exact make and model I use. It's economical, but if you use it right, you can get primo professional results. Good luck!!!

I would highly recommend any option that allows the use of an external mic. Nobody enjoys watching videos with inferior audio, and a cheap $30 lav or mini shotgun would be miles ahead of internal camera or cell phone mics.
At $300, their are plenty of camcorder type cameras that will give you decent enough video quality (not 4K). The main advantage of this option would be the use of a large zoom range if needed. The Canon Vixia r800 is about the cheapest you can get with a mic input, and can record 1080/60p.
If you want better quality, i would recommend the Panasonic FZ300 a bridge camera, which gives you all the manual controls and feel of a DSLR, bit a fixed super zoom lens. I recommend the FZ300 because
Its a fun camera to use if your used to DSLR controls. The wifi app comes in handy if your shooting alone, as it lets you view your framing, control the zoom and focus, set exposure, start stop recording, and playback your footage instantly on your phone for review.
The next step up IMO is the G7, which is a DSLM, has most of the above features, a bigger m43 sensor to improve low light performance, but you lose the super zoom lens and the 120p recording, and at the moment is $600.
But I think you can't go wrong with the FZ300..

In that case just your basic 1080p camcorder like this one would be a good option, they don't have particularly crisp video but would be better than the iPhone 5 and easier to manage. More light always helps of course, a nice brightly lit room makes it have a lot less noise.
I recently scored a Canon Vixia HF R700 due to some great advice in this sub a few months ago. Since then I've used it in multiple situations including at Indiana Comic Con 2017 and GenCon 2017. Here's a picture of the setup I use. Since then I think the next generation Canon Vixia HF R800 is the one that's available. Good luck! And if you find something else let me know. I'm always interested in upgrading gear if it's the right thing to do.

I highly recommend the Vixia HF R800 if you are just getting into using an actual camera over a webcam.
If you want to go for something a lot better, and also more expensive, check out the Sony AX33
Both cameras feature "Clean HDMI out" meaning you can turn off all the OSD(On screen display features like recording time, date, etc).
If you have questions about either I'd be happy to answer as best I can.
The only other camera I might recommend for under $250 is a canon hr800? I doubt it has a much better internal mic than the Sony BUT it can send sound over and hdmi cable if you ever need to live stream with it.
It does have a mic input and I might recommend buying a cheap $20 shotgun mic for it. Once again, you get what you pay for but it might be better than the Sony!

Video editing depends what your computer can handle and what video ur making. I use hitfilm express which is free. However it needs a decent gpu of some sort. Shotcut on the other hand is pretty basic and runs well on lower end hardware.
