I wonder how Carcassone would work for overworld maps.

Have the players play a game before hand THEN tell them it's the overworld map.

I don't know which big box you bought, but the Big Box 5 (that I personally own) here does include the river mini-expansion. That's where the river tiles come from.

As far as the tiles as a part of the game, the group I play with uses the base game start piece so I can't really comment one way or the other.

I'm Australian myself and picked up the big box at the end of last year from a local store, you might have to search some of the less popular stores you encounter.

• Carcassonne: The River (I guess that's River 2, right? Won't need River 1, correct?)

  Q1.2: I think I'll be doubling (tripling?) the River 2 somewhere... What is your advice upon such choice?

Wow, after doing a bit of research myself, I can't believe how much that sole expansion is. Most websites I went to were out of stock with no hope of getting new orders of it in. I know it may give you a bit of duplicates, but I'd recommend getting the Big Box 5, which has the Wheel of Fortune expansion in it.

I found it on amazon for 87.99USD (80.63EUR), while the Wheel of Fortune expansion by itself is 119.00USD (109.05EUR). These come with free shipping, if that's any silver lining with these prices.
