Duct tape or zip tie that shit and tough it out 'til Friday. Get rid of everything except for a large back pack worth of necessities. Get a weatherproof bag WITHOUT HOLES IN IT and some rain gear. Put things you don't want wet in the bag. Keep only your most comfortable set of shoes and a back up pair for rainy days. Three changes of outerwear and 5 changes of underwear, as many pairs of socks as you can fit, and a thirty day supply of toiletries stored in a weatherproof container. Get a good backpack and keep it physically secured at all times. I recommend https://www.amazon.com/Condor-3-Day-Assault-Pack/dp/B0086UAF9M for the pack, https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/5ive-star-gear-gi-spec-waterproof-laundry-bag-od-green-690104217680.do?sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwihi_e-ksXdAhUIEawKHZeGDb4Q9QEwAXoECAQQCA for the weatherproof bag, and https://www.amazon.com/Military-Goretex-Waterproof-Parka-Jacket/dp/B01BFBHYFG for the rain gear.

Those are assault packs

I recommend a MOLLE 3 Day Assault Pack or Convoy Pack whether it be from Condor or 5.11. The reasons are as follows:

  • Modular so you can add packs for everything like battery, cables, etc
  • Often has space for water bladder
  • Some are waterproof
  • Very Durable. I have two and carried both on an Iraq and Africa deployment, and used it at all rehearsals, and on tour yearly with no signs or wearing out.

Look, depending on your campus and living situation, do you really functionally need a backpack at this price? I attended an urban university and I saw the females use everything from canvas totes to luxury purses to get their stuff around. Is this more of a fashion purchase or more of a utility purchase?

I've seen people work fine with $25 IKEA backpacks, while others with long transit commutes needing essentially tactical gear. My point is, I recommend starting university first with what you have already to base your purchase decision on experience, versus speculating. This is especially true if you're in STEM, where the books are heavier at the program start (my calculus book lasted 3 semesters), and at 1500 cu in / 25L these may not be big enough. Maybe it makes more sense to get a nice briefcase if you're in B-school, maybe you're driving all the time and you can get by with a reusable shopping bag.

TLDR: Wait until school starts before your purchase to make a more informed decision

Tangental anecdote: I once knew a guy who bought a bunch of cheap <$5 backpacks when they were on sale at Old Navy, and treated them as disposable. By day he'd use them for school supplies, by night he'd load them up with beer cans and lose it at the party.

I have this bag and absolutely love it. I use it as my suitcase when I travel most of the time also.

I have the smaller assault pack which I found far too small, but excellent for the price.

Therefor I'd recommend the larger one http://www.amazon.com/Condor-3-Day-Assault-Pack/dp/B0086UAF9M/ref=pd_sbs_sg_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0AXRMNBCZHKXQMNCF8DA
