2 modems doesn't make sense in your situation, although 2 routers is a definite possibility. You will get the fastest speed through a wired connection. The way you describe your living situation, you would probably be best served by buying a fast ethernet switch, and a Wireless Access Point. I really like the Ubiquiti wireless access points, I have 12 of these exact same ones at work. I'm certain you can find cheaper ones, but this is the one I have experience with. Run the ethernet cable (hopefully CAT6) upstairs to the switch, then run ethernet to the access point. I suggest the switch because it is the easiest and cheapest way to get multiple ethernet ports upstairs.
Plug a switch like this one into your ethernet port in your room and have both you and your roommate connect to it. No idea how SBU's network set up, but it could work.
