I completely agree with the top comment in this thread so I'll just add this biography. I took an entire class about Darwin in college and why he was important and this was the main text. If you're interested in reading about him, it's a pretty good biography of the man and goes into why he was so important, his science, etc.
Darwin: The Life of a Tormented Evolutionist de Adrian Desmond and James Moore (New York: Warner, 1991). Link en amazon.
Why can i not upvote this more than once?! I read this (http://www.amazon.com/Darwin-Tormented-Evolutionist-Adrian-Desmond/dp/0393311503/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303620565&sr=8-1) in less than a week thinking there will be a test on it. Only to find out we spent a class discussing it. AKA The professor dominated the conversation. This was the most listless biography I've ever read and it was almost never ending.
up side: worth a read for darwin enthusiasts. Also, Darwin's personality reminded me of a modern day actor.
