At our shop our lab deshedding process is:

  1. Comb the entire dog with a good metal comb until the comb starts to pull out only minimal undercoat.
  2. Curry comb the dog until only minimal topcoat starts coming off (up to 10 minutes maximum).
  3. 10 minutes maximum of furmination.

The idea behind deshedding is to pull out all the detached hair, and as much catagen (shedding stage) hair as you can, while preserving as much anagen (growing stage) and telogen (resting stage) hair as possible. Too much curry combing or furminating will start pulling out hairs not "scheduled" to shed for weeks or months and could leave your dog with irritated skin and long lasting thin spots in the coat.

Normally or clients report that their labs stop shedding for at least a few weeks after a groom, so give it a shot, and repeat the process as necessary. Contrary to popular belief, you can make a huge impact on the shedding of labs, but it does take some practice, dedication, and the right tools.

I recommend this super expensive comb, and this super cheap curry comb.

EdiT: totally ignore the strikethrough. I misremebered that whole bit.
