The answer here is that it depends. If you're starting out like the OP is, /u/QxWho has the right idea if you already have a decent machine to play around with VMs. Spinning up VMs with Virtualbox to test things is pretty easy nowadays.

If you'd like dedicated hardware and don't want to run VMs or containers on your main workstation, /r/homelabsales, Ebay, and sometimes a local electronics recycle company will have good deals. Honestly for starting out, old desktops that have a decent amount of RAM (8GB+) and a quad core processor can do loads of work.   • 8GB RAM (can be upgraded later if needed)
