Hi,

For photo editing I always recommend a LED IPS display with sRGB over 80% - it's about color coverage - helps a lot and for video editing a quad-core CPU and at leat 8 GB RAM. Here are some options for you: noteb search went for a quad-core CPU, LED IPS display with sRGB over 80%, under 5 lbs and over 6H battery life.

You can see and change the search parameters using the "Refine results" button in the upper-left part of the search results page. You can also click on the laptops for more information.

A great option for you could be this one: Dell XPS 15 9560 UHD(US) - quad-core CPU, gaming GPU, great 4k display 16.7M colors, 100% sRGB, PCIe SSD, 2 memory slots, over 6H, TB3, just over 4.5 lbs, aluminium chassis and a great design. It's on sale at amazon for 1018$.

Another option could be this one: Lenovo Ideapad 720S-15 quad-core CPU, better gaming GPU, FHD LED IPS display 262K colors, 90% sRGB, PCIe SSD, 2 memory slots, over 6H battery life, TB3, aluminium chassis, and just over 4.5 lbs. This one has some throttling and overheating problems under heavy load - I've read some mixed reviews. This one is around 1000$ online.

Lenovo Ideapad 720S-15 vs Dell XPS 15 9560 UHD(US) - I think the price on the XPS is a great deal - worth checking out.

Hope I helped!

While they are not cheap, MacBooks are build to last both in terms of hardware and software (upgrades). I will recommend MacBooks over their Windows counterpart. An alternative that might suit you will be the -> Dell XPS 15. In terms of build quality, the aluminum Chassis is as close as you can get to a MacBook. Specs wise, they are pretty decent, you will get a 4K Touch Display, i5 (up to 3.5 GHz) processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD storage, GTX 1050. Best to try it at you local stores and see if it works for you. Good luck!

Last gen XPS 15 should be plenty powerful enough for your needs and have great build quality. A little over budget but this one comes with some great features including that gourgus 4k screen. There's no numberpad though, something to consider if you deal with Excel all day.

Here is a great deal on the Lenovo ThinkPad E580 20KS003SUS 15.6" LCD Notebook - Intel Core i5 (8th Gen) i5-8250U Quad-core (4 Core) 1.60 GHz - 8 GB DDR4 SDRAM - 256 GB SSD - Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (English) - 1920 x 1080 - In-plane Switching (IPS) Technology - Black , https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=34-850-597
I found.

Here's another one, not as fancy but looks to be a good work machine. It has a number pad but no backlight on the keyboard.

New, Open Box versions of the model with 1TB HDD + 32GB SSD can be found on eBay for $1100.

Cheapest I can find for the standard model (i5-7300HQ, 8gb ram, 256gb SSD, GTX 1050), is through Dell's website at $1300 after coupon "50OFF699".

You can find a cheaper version of the same model as above but with a 4k display on amazon for $1475.

And for the higher end model with an i7, 16gb of ram, 512gb SSD and 4K display, you can find it at Microcenter for $1600. In store only though.

Sounds like your dad needs a business machine (clear) and something with a dGPU (also clear). I was going to recommend a Lenovo ThinkPad as well, although I'm not sure if the keyboard on those is backlit(?) because I don't think so. Since you need a dGPU, it's going to be hard to find a business laptop at that price point, but let's see. I actually just found this Dell XPS 15-inch for 1'083.-$ which is a great deal on something with a GTX1050 and all those bells and whistles you were asking for. If for some reason you don't like it, you could take a look at these alternatives:

  • Lenovo Flex 15
  • HP Pavillion 15

Honestly, I would recommend you a Ryzen Mobile system if it wasn't for it's one caviot: Drivers, it has terrible drivers. AMD for some reason let OEMs distribute the drivers meaning that the drivers these systems run on are extremely old. The reason I'm saying this is because I'm writing you this message on a premium EliteBook 755 G5 business laptop with the Ryzen 7 2700U and have to deal with these driver issues everyday. Only get it if your dad doesn't mind some issues that always seem to be the same so if he doesn't use those applications, he should not only be fine, he'll be impressed. Take a look at this Dell and this HP if you're still interested in Ryzen Mobile. Hardware-wise these systems are top notch and if your dad doesn't play DX11 games that demand too much or use VLC, he should be fine (VLC can be fixed by switching to the OpenGL output mode). As you can see, these Ryzen systems come with a lot more RAM and storage just because the APU is so much cheaper than the CPU/GPU combination those other systems I recommended have.

The 2016 dell xps 15 seems to fit everything you're looking for, but is a few cents over your budget.

u/LapNerd · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

For your usage you would need [quad core] processor and [GeForce GTX 1050] GPU.

I would recommend [Dell XPS 15 9560] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N2RLP5M/) as it comes with: -

CPU: i5-7300HQ

GPU: GeForce GTX 1050

RAM: 8 GB

Display: 4K 15.6 IPS screen

Storage: 265 SSD

Long battery life

It is a great choice because of its great heat management system and high build quality, along with its specifications makes it the best option for your usage and it is within your budget.

u/Tyrangle · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

You and I are apparently looking for the same laptop. My laptop would ideally have a similar build quality to the MacBook Pro it's replacing, decent battery life, and enough hardware to run Overwatch. I'm currently leaning towards the Dell XPS 15.

  • 7th Generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ Processor
  • 15.6"
  • 4K Touch Display
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 256 GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 3.9 lbs

It's a full notch below the Acer recommended by /u/shopineer as far as performance is concerned, but you're shedding 2 lbs and getting a durable aluminum chassis in exchange. That may or may not be worth it depending on your priorities. Note that you can get the FHD version through Dell for roughly the same price if you don't want the 4K display. I've only heard bad things about 4K since looking into it, so I'm personally leaning towards the FHD display.

hey guys, Just asking for some advice regarding whether or not this deal on amazon is legit or if there is something that I am not seeing as it is significantly less than most other offers. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N2RLP5M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3IKJDH4NOS7AW&psc=1 I realise its an i5 processor however even with that taken into account it is still like 600+USD cheaper than the next option. Also I'm relatively new to amazon so since there are many dealers selling it for the same price should I just go with the company with the combination of the most/best reviews? Is there one tech dealer that is reputable or is anyone on amazon pretty reliable to purchase from?

Thanks heaps

Don't buy the linked ASUS laptop. It uses an older generation graphics card and processor which are significantly inferior to their modern counterparts. For example, take https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-6-Full-HD-IPS-Gaming-Notebook-Intel-Core-i5-7300HQ-2-50GHz-/372243943065?hash=item56ab77ce99. It has a better processor, a way better graphics card, a PCIe NVME SSD compared to a HDD, DDR4 RAM over DDR3, and is $110 cheaper ($170 cheaper if you count ebay bucks). Does only have 250 GB storage, but it's easy enough to install a 7200 RPM 1 TB hard drive for around $50.

It really depends on what your needs are. Based on the information you provided, the laptop I linked seems way overkill. Unless you're doing heavy gaming/video editing, you don't really need a good laptop. Popular games will all run smoothly on a GTX 1050 (except maybe pubg).

Almost every gaming laptop in your price range is going to look bulky (fails your small model requirement), and non gaming laptops won't run games smoothly. As for fan noise, check youtube reviews for the laptop before buying.

If you value form factor and weight and don't mind shelling out extra, the Dell XPS or Microsoft Surface Book laptops are a possibility. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N2RLP5M is a recently discounted $1200 Dell XPS that can pretty much play any popular game smoothly. These types of laptops have significantly worse specs than equally priced counterparts, but they look beautiful.

u/fashwam · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks for the suggestion! This laptop is a definite contender and the price for what I'd get is fantastic. I didn't consider this when I posted originally, but looking at that Acer I might prefer something that looks a little less like a gaming laptop. Is there anything you can think of that is similar in most/all ways but is a little more toned-down in the looks department?

What do you think about this Dell XPS 15 suggested by /u/Tyrangle or The Eluktro Pro N850HP6 that I found looking through the list of gaming laptops you suggested?

Edited out accidental affiliate link (I hope).

What do you guys think of the Dell XPS? Some people seem to think they are quite unstable etc. But I've found one on Amazon for $1000 which seems like a steal. It's got almost all my minimum requirements too, and is very light, portable, small size and great battery life.

Can be found on amazon here

Thoughts?

The dell xps 15 is a great choice, quad core, sleek looking, optional 4k screen for being able to watch your 4k videos in 4k, I think all models come with discrete graphics but I'm not too sure, and an ssd for transferring large 4k videos fast. Although for large 4k videos you might want to go with 250gb+ of ssd storage so you can have some wiggle room in case you need to have multiple 30-60 min videos on there at one time. The i5 xps 15 is around your budget on Amazon, Dell XPS9560-5000SLV-PUS 15.6" Ultra Thin Laptop, 7th Gen Core i5 ( up to 3.5 GHz), 8GB, 256GB SSD, Nvidia Gaming GTX 1050 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N2RLP5M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_OfSBzb43TECTH

I found this really good deal for an xps 15 9560. It has a 4k screen and a dedicated graphics card in case you want to play games or do video editing. If the offer ends, then you should probably pick up and xps 15 8th gen cpu because the quad cores on the 8th gen cpus are really good for multi tasking. The starting price for xps 15 laptops is $1000 but they're one of the most portable laptops (4lbs or ~1.8kg) and have one of the best build quality out of all the windows laptops.

I also heard the Huawei Matebook is also really good. I don't have one but the reviews are all positive and the screen is 3:2 which makes it really good for web browsing and word. They also start at $1000. Apparently the screen is gorgeous. It's basically a mac that has windows.

These laptops come with windows 10 home but on Dell's website you can upgrade the xps to windows pro for $60

There are probably a lot of other good options but there isn't that many options under $1000 that are portable.
