You can probably try to find an Mbox Micro. If it's just editing, and no recording this would probably be pretty good.

Digi used to have an MBox 2 Micro which was the size of a flash drive, so it's clearly possible to design an output-only device that sits in the side of your computer interfacing with the computer using something that is neither CardBus nor ExpressCard.

That said, though, have you seen the rigs of most laptop-based live performers? You're usually dragging around devices large enough in size and/or quantity that bringing along cables becomes more or less a non-issue. I can't imagine any companies making control surfaces that can be attached to the side of a computer, either.

I've carried around an Apogee One with me for recording demos, and it was hardly a PITA. Lugging around an 002 Rack was a PITA but it was mostly due to how fracking heavy the damn thing is.
