I'm going to jump in on the pedal part and also suggest a Digitech Drop pedal.
It isn't the cheapest around, but is the "best". Why? It allows a RS player to leave their guitar in just E-standard or Drop D tuning - or swap between those 2 - and play all but around a dozen of the songs available to a PS user. Dethklok dlc on an e-standard guitar with 008 gauge strings? No problems.
The other thing I'd recommend if he doesn't already have - a really good set of WIRED headphones. Nothing with a USB cable or BlueTooth - just a simple 3.5mm or 1/4 inch jack and from a quality brand.

I 2nd the Digitech Drop. I have my Drop D bass and my standard bass and 99% of the songs are covered with this except the non440 songs.
There is the Drop Whammy specific for Bass but it is an extra $120.

I use the smaller version amazon. It has no problems in combination with rocksmith. Now i only have to change between drop D and standard E tuning. The pedal is able to change the tuning then to e.g. Drop C or D Standard.
Get a Digitech Drop, I've been loving it for In Flames low stuff!
