Here is a little guide I wrote for someone in a similar situation. (I am in the Boston area, too.)

Cotton = bad, especially as the bottom layer. It absorbs sweat and never lets go. After a little while, it clings, rubs, feels heavy, and can really irritate the skin. (My skins tends to be on the dry side. I was actually get mild hives from the irritation. According to the interwebs, this is caused by blocked sweat ducts.) So, having a wicking fabric is really important, especially as a base layer. I bought several of these DRI_EQUIP shirts, which are inexpensive and highly rated. I absolutely love them. I almost immediately bought some short-sleeved ones, too.

What I wear at different temperatures:

General advice — “Dress for the 2nd mile”.

50 and above — Short-sleeve shirt and shorts. Enough said.

Around 40-50 — long-sleeved shirt (possibly with a short-sleeve t-shirt on top) and shorts. My shorts are fairly long, so they cover up enough to be OK.

Around 30-40 — two long-sleeved shirts, running pants, gloves and hat. The hat is good for taking on/off to regulate a little bit, if needed. I had the pants from when I used to bike. They are pretty light, cotton (which I guess might be bad, but I haven’t had the same issues as with shirts.) Down around 30, I wear this terramar shirt that I bought as a warmer, wicking layer. I’ve been really happy with it as well.

Around 20-30 — same as above, but the hat and gloves stay on!

Below 20 — Add layers as needed. You'll be getting the hang of it. I will also wear a Buff over my face for a while when starting out, but usually don't need it after I'm warmed up.
