Maybe a book? I think the Humans of New York book could pretty much be given to everyone, it's all happy and uplifting and cool.

You said she's on her feet all day so maybe something to help relax a little like a foot spa? Otherwise they make these little balls that you roll under your foot (my grandma used to do this with just a tennis ball) and it's supposed to good for your muscles and kind of like a mini massage.

Does she use anything to help treat her bunions? They make some cool products like this and this that might be helpful! They have some really good reviews, she may already have something like this though?

Not the best ideas haha but maybe it will help! Good luck with shopping! :)

I use a ball with spikes on it and use it to massage the underside of my foot.

As for exercises, my favorite is standing on one foot on an elevated platform barefoot, not too high. Be right at the inner edge of it. Then slowly dip maybe for about 10-20 reps for 3 sets. You're forced to maintain your arch. Then switch.

My other favorite one is doing single leg deadlifts. But use a theraband and attach it to your standing leg while also attaching it to a pole, that way it's forcing your leg to point outwards as you dip. For example, if you'll be standing on your right leg, the pole will be on your right.

A slightly more advance method would be to do the opposite. If you're standing on your right, you'll attach the band to your left. That way, as you dip, you also have to force your leg and thus your arch to not collapse as you dip.

It could be any number of things. You might want to see a doctor if the pain starts spreading.

When I was a long-distance runner I experienced occasional tendonitis in my arches, and also when I played rugby and did a lot of sprinting. I have a special ball from a local running store, kind of pliable and with blunt spines, that I would roll with my bare arches whenever I was seated at home. You can use a golf ball if you don't have access to one of those, but I found it on Amazon and it's very worth the price. I had like 5 and kept them near every surface in the house so that if I was relaxing, I was rolling my arches.

Also icing can be good immediately after running (keep it to 15 min), or submerge in an icewater bath for the same period of time, to prevent frostbite. The icing and rolling in combination kept my feet pretty happy, but I do recommend seeing a physical therapist or sports medicine professional just to be 100% sure it's nothing more serious before you progress.

Do you do any massage work on your calves? There are many muscles in the calves that attach to different spots in your feet and, if they build up scar tissue/tightness, they can create foot soreness.

Would definitely recommend seeing a podiatrist. But I've generally heard good things about 1. Superfeet insoles and 2. Foot Rubz massage ball (https://www.amazon.com/Due-North-Massage-Plantar-Fasciitus/dp/B002QEY6NK/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1511988545&sr=8-3). I've heard that rolling your foot over a frozen water bottle works well, too. I've never had PF, but I've been with athletes/significant others who have. Hope you recover soon!

This might be a big long, hope it helps.

For me a foam roller didn't work, couldn't get to the right muscles or get enough pressure. I had to focus on three things and used a different tool for each:

  • Tibias Anterior/extensor digitorum, outside of shin and calf, these ended up being my tightest muscles. I used the smaller 80mm rogue supernova ball for these. I think that product is over priced, but look for something stiff with a tacky surface that grips the skin. I found being able to twist while apply pressure really helped break things up. I rolled this area kneeling while also moving that ankle through as much of a range of motion as possible.

  • Plantar fascia. Mine was VERY tight from being curled up in aggressive rock shoes. I used a smaller diameter firm ball for this, you could probably just use a golf ball. For the bottom of the foot I found just pressure is enough to get it done. Stand on that little guy, let it work up into any knot, try to relax your foot over it. Go into a slight squat (dorsiflexion) to get more pressure on a knot after 30-60 seconds of steady pressure.

  • Voodoo floss. This sounded like a gimmick at first, but after using it I'm a convert. It gave the most bang for the buck in terms of range of motion. While balls and rollers seem to be great for getting a particular knot/trigger point, the voodoo floss seems to break up fascia in fibers amazing. Wrap it tight, move through the range of motion for 90-120 seconds and you're done. You can nail everything from your arch to your knee in one shot. I used the red bands that are a bit higher compression. Wrap at the arch first, work your way up. Go into dorsiflexion w/o letting the arch collapse (track knee just slightly outside the foot). When your range of motion stops increasing or at 120 seconds call it good.

  • Do a few pistol squats. Use a kettle bell and hold it out away from your body to help cheat through the lowering phase, as time goes on and your ROM gets better hold the weight closer and closer to your body. Progress to using no weight and letting the ankle into full dorsiflexion. Also stand on a box so that you can drop the other foot if your hips are tight.

PF struck in late September. Tried to fight through it for two weeks and had to give in. Tried to just stay off of it as much as I could and added more cycling through October and into Nov. It seemed to get worse. Early December I started rolling it and being more careful to stretch it every day, and as of early Jan I'm working back up the running.

I believe my old shoes/insoles were largely to blame. Instant relief when I changed. I was reluctant to do so as they were still in pretty good shape but the slight loss of arch support wrecked me, as far as I can tell.

If you're bringing the tennis ball because of plantar fascia related pain, you should check out the foot rubz ball. It's tiny and more compact than a tennis ball, which should stretch out your muscles more. You might also go with a lacrosse ball (heavier) or golf ball, as the tennis ball might start to lose some of its strength and not give your feet the massage it needs.
