I bought two of these Dyson stick vacs, one for me and one for my daughter. Both of them stopped working after a couple of years. So I replaced them with much cheaper Electrolux stick vacs from Costco:

They are $120 at Amazon but I got them for $99. Canadian at Costco. (They are probably cheaper in the States) They work just as well as the Dyson and are still going strong after 3 years. Dyson - never again.

I was hoping for something similar to the Dyson DC44. Really I want cordless and big enough canister to tackle large amounts of dog hair/dirt from bare floors. My regular bissell is full after I vacuum the carpets so imagine how fast a DC44 will fill up.

EDIT: I was looking for alternatives and I found a couple:

Bissel

Electrolux

Both you can find on craigslist.

I am thoroughly impressed that this is still active and you are answering questions still.

Are there any good portable vacuums for doing stairs and the like? Ideally a battery powered one. We have about 30 carpeted steps to do, so a battery could be sufficient, but I am worried I will just be wasting money if I do buy one.

We currently have a Kenmore canister vac that is decent for the rest of the house, but unwieldy on the stairs and I'm assuming most other canister vacs would be the same.

Example of an electrolux I was considering

Thank you in advance.
