Such adorable little boys!

qweers has already given a bunch of great ideas.

  1. Odds are they'll spend most of their time cuddling. Sometimes they prefer sleeping alone. I second qweers' advice on at least one sleepy area per rat.

  2. I only have one hoarder but the others keep him in check. I keep the bowls full at all times. My bowls aren't very big and between four rats, they go through the food pretty quick. Here's one site's recommendation for feeding.

  3. Different cages work differently with fleece. For my Critter Nation, I make mats that just rest on the bottom tray and the shelves. The mats are made of fleece over Uhaul furniture padding. They're pretty bulky and, for the most part, stay in place on their own. There are different methods for keeping them in place for different types of cages.

  4. Yeah, let them get settled a bit but that shouldn't stop you from getting to know them.

  5. I don't let my boys run around loose. The bed works for most people (my bed is too low, they jump off). I made a 4' x 5' playpen out of acrylic from work. You could also use cardboard clipped or taped together. I like having one large enough to sit in with them.

  6. If you can get your rat sitter to play with them daily, that would be amazing for them. Letting them out at least a couple times over the duration of the 5 days would probably be the minimum requirement.

  7. I have a feeling you'll know when they need to be tossed.

  8. Dig boxes are fun for them! You can even sprinkle treats, seeds, nuts, etc in the box so they have to forage through the bedding to find treats. Were you thinking aspen? Whatever goes in the box will probably get pushed out and might end up on your floors. I've heard from some people who used to use aspen shavings but switched to fleece because they got sick of picking wood shavings from their socks. You could also use sterilized rocks or pebbles in a dig box. You could use fleece scraps or paper crinkles.
