  1. Hiss -- draw a snake tile and place it next to an existing tile that matches. If no tile matches, begin a new snake. Everyone plays off the same communal snakes. It's low strategy (you score points by being the lucky person who can close a snake by capping it with a head or tail), but is at least mildly interesting to an adult. You can also make it cooperative play.

  2. Crazy Faces -- like Crazy Eights, but with slight variations. The deck has fun fruit and vegetable faces.

I can't recommend highly enough this Montessori postcard stand for holding playing cards. For many years, your kids will have trouble holding adult cards in their small hands. Many solutions exist, and they all suck. This thing holds lots of cards without a problem. I enjoy using it too.

  3. Charades. I have an old Charades by Pressman. We don't use the game board, just the card deck. It lacks pictures, and thus requires reading, but that's fine if you have someone who can tell your 4-year-old what subject he needs to act out. If your 4-year-old can get into the fun of charades, you'll enjoy this game the most, even if one parent helps her with the acting.

You could make your own charades, of course. Have each participant write a charade subject on a piece of paper, maybe 10 subjects each. Then draw subjects from a hat.

  4. The Kids of Carcassonne -- Unlike the adult version, you only try to complete roads. Meeples of various colors are depicted on the tiles. When you place a tile that completes a road, if you have meeples of your color depicted on any tiles along the road, you place a meeple in each appropriate location. Here's a PDF of the rules (note: the first page is blank, scroll down). Curiously, Google Shopping only shows 3 stores selling the game. I hope it's not being discontinued.

Maybe Slamwich or Hisss. They're both card games for kids that are easy to play.
