Keyboards with reasonably narrow spacebars are really hard to find. Most non-Apple keyboards that are "designed for Macs" just relabel the keys and keep the extra-wide spacebars that put modifier keys out of reach of the thumbs. I'm not aware of any relatively normal Cherry MX boards that have a narrow space bar, but there are some no-name cheap Mac style boards that might have okay scissor switches (example 1, example 2. A used Apple keyboard in good condition would be a better option if you can find one.

I've considered trying a TECK for having accessible modifier keys, and its reprogrammability would definitely help with that, but I can't spend $250 on a keyboard at the moment.

Ok so I made a new user and still encountered the same problem. I'm thinking it definitely has something to do with the layout of the keyboard (model).

The integrated keyboard on the MBP works fine still if that makes any difference. Pretty frustrating but thanks anyways for the help!
