The comics are NOT like the movies. We don't have a script for the MCU Infinity War so we have no idea which comics it will borrow from. If past MCU movies are any indication, it will borrow from many different series spanning decades.

That said, there is a very popular 90's event(s) called Infinity Gauntlet that was followed up by the Infinity War:

[optional] Infinity Gauntlet/War Prelude:

For the Inhumans, read these:

Events have a main book so if the event is Infinity then they will put out a book called Infinity and if the event is called Civil War then they will put out a book called Civil War and so on and that is where the main part of the story occurs. Sometimes you will have no ongoings really tied that strongly into it and others they may have ongoigns tell part of the event story to expand the story. Typically if you look at the trade versions the Marvel hardcover version will include the main story and any other issues from other titles that may add to it.

The "Infinity" hardcover collects the stories around the Infinity Event.

If you want to read the Avengers titles in order, you should get "Avengers: Prelude to Infinity" which includes 12 and 13.

Issues 12-13 are a stand-alone story focused on Hyperion and Thor, but still plays into Hickman's larger story. Probably not vital, but definitely part of the story.

The easiest way to acquire the run would be the two omnibi:

Avengers by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus Vol. 1 (Avengers (2012) 1-23, New Avengers (2013) 1-12, Infinity 1-6, +more)

Avengers by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus Vol. 2 (Avengers (2012) 24-44, New Avengers (2013) 13-33

The next best format would probably be the oversized hardcovers:

Infinity [Infinity 1-6, Avengers 14-23, New Avengers 7-12, Infinity: Against the Tide 1-2]

Avengers Vol. 3 [Avengers (2012) 24-34]

New Avengers Vol. 2 [New Avengers (2013) 13-23]

Avengers: Time Runs Out [Avengers (2012) 35-44, New Avengers (2013) 24-33]

Or you can get the smaller volumes, available in both hardcover and softcover:

Infinity (same hardcover version as the list above; paperback version also available)

Avengers: Time Runs Out Vol. 1 [Avengers (2012) 35-37; New Avengers (2013) 24-25]

Avengers: Time Runs Out Vol. 2 [Avengers (2012) 38-39; New Avengers (2013) 26-28]

Avengers: Time Runs Out Vol. 3 [Avengers (2012) 40-42; New Avengers (2013) 29-30]

Avengers: Time Runs Out Vol. 4 [Avengers (2012) 43-44; New Avengers (2013) 31-33]

And then all of these lead into:

Secret Wars (2015) (hardcover and softcover available)

Some of these books might be out of print, but you may be able to find them used at a decent price at your comic shop or on ebay. Your cheapest solution will likely be to read the digital versions on Marvel Unlimited.

And also check out this guide to Hickman's Marvel Universe comics, which culminates in Secret Wars (2015).

And here's a nice visual guide.

I don't think you need to read those entire volumes, because the last few issues of each of those arcs are included in the Infinity trade paperback.

To answer OP's question, the Infinity trade paper back does include all 6 issues of Infinity: https://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Jonathan-Hickman/dp/0785184228

source: I bought it this weekend

This is 2/3rds of the series... Here is a list you can use to flip between the books between issues. [Here]() is a link to the main Infinity series you need. You will have to switch every issue throughout the trades, but it is worth it to read it in order. Make sure you pick up the main series first though, if you can manage. They also have a complete infinity with all of it Here.

Try other sites for what I listed, you may find a deal somewhere.

EDIT: I can't seem to find an Infinity Trade even though I was sure there was one with just Issues 1 - 6 of the core series... My Mistake.

Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 3 of Avengers

Ooohh, that's the Avengers' Infinity Arc , a tie in to Hickmans' Avengers. nothing to do with the stones/gauntlet, just one of 3 huge arcing Avengers story taking place through it. Some of the best comic reading I've ever done

Wow. So I just checked the Amazon listing, and it says, "COLLECTING: Infinity 1-6, New Avengers 7-12, Avengers 14-23, Infinity: Against the Tide Infinite Comic 1-2."

Looks like it has the lead up issues including Against the Tide 1 and 2. I like single issues, but all of this in one book is pretty awesome. I think I may have to pick this up soon as well.

Amazon Listing for those that care.

Since you want to read Civil War, I'd say that's as good a place as any to start.

Other recommendations I would make of newer stuff;

Avengers

New Avengers

Infinity

It might seem intimidating to jump into a series without knowing a ton of backstory on characters, but that's what I did, (New Avengers) and I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It was nice not having pre-conceived notions about how a character should be written.

My advice: jump in there head first and read whatever catches your eye.
