I would most likely take the machine with you. Otherwise you are gambling that the box won't need any physical or human intervention in 4 months. One untimely power outage and you'd be hosed.

You can buy some hardware and make yourself a Linux router that only allows traffic to go over your U.S. VPN service.
I posted here a starter template to get started with that. You would just plug the work box into your custom router and it will show you as being wherever the VPN service is.

Some potential drawbacks

Using a VPN to connect another VPN from another country. Possibly going to be slow as hell, maybe unusable.
Employer noticing you have suddenly appeared in a new state overnight.
Inability to troubleshoot the router may leave you unable to work.
