Introduction to Comics

How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems

Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Reading primarily for enjoyment or encyclopedic knowledge? Collecting? Have the time/resources to read 50 or 500 comics per character?

Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, etc. for now. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so they aren’t necessarily ideal starting points. Writers change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told. Remember, there are many great characters, creators, publishers, etc. to explore.

Pick an interesting character/team and seek their most popular/acclaimed stories. Focus on self-contained, complete stories in one corner of the universe. There will be unexplained references/characters, just persevere or Wiki. Don’t let the tangled web of shared-universe comics overwhelm you. Think of it like solving a jigsaw puzzle one small piece at a time until you finally see the big picture.

Discover your preferences and let them guide you. Don’t get stuck preparing/over-analyzing, just start reading. Do you like/dislike old/new comics? Specific writers/genres? Cartoony/realistic art? Familiar/weird concepts? References/self-contained? All-ages/mature content? Follow these instincts. Didn’t understand a reference? Maybe read that next.

I would also recommend checking out the FAQ on this subreddit, but I'll give you a few series that I like to recommend to new readers and would probably fit your tastes based on what you've said you're currently reading.

Invincible Also written by Robert Kirkman.
Saga A world spanning epic with gorgeous art.
Hawkeye A superhero book that doesn't feel like one.
Batman A great take on a classic character.

If you're digging that Daredevil try this. One of my favorite new comics Witch Doctor. Kirkman's super hero epic Invincible.

The name's Invincible.

Amazon page

(I was going to link to Wikipedia or TvTropes, but they're both full of spoilers. Amazon isn't.)

What you're looking for is Invincible and Wolverine and the X-Men

Yep. I want to send you my favorite 4 panels from the series, but they are super spoiler-y. I'd say you should buy the first Invincible Ultimate Collection. It's pretty cheap and will give you a ton of content for the money. 20 bucks used from Amazon.

Is this the one you're talking about:

Invincible: The Ultimate Collection, Vol. 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/158240500X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_2NjGwb2T6A5P0

Well it's hard to judge what he's read if he's such a fanatic. Maybe Spider-man Blue? But it's pretty popular. I think a good thing could be the Invincible Ultimate Collection Vol. 1 if he hasn't read it yet.

Not related to the OPs topic but check out the comic Invincible. I too for a dozen or more years lost my fix on DBZ. This comic is more like an american DBZ storyline with a great twist. Try it!http://www.amazon.com/Invincible-Ultimate-Collection-Vol-1/dp/158240500X/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1313527945&sr=8-16

I know a couple other people have mentioned The Walking Dead, but another Kirkman original is Invincible, about a teenage boy who discovers he has superpowers. A good antidote to a lot of the superhero sexism you mentioned, and an all-around good read.

Invincible, by Robert Kirkman. Awesome super hero story, lots of twists, lots of humor. Not a graphic novel but an ongoing series, although this ought to get you started. If you can get past issue 11 without being hooked then I sincerely apologize. Also, Walking Dead by Kirkman is equally awesome. It's zombies instead of superheroes, if you're into that.

It's funny because I was really into The Walking Dead and for years I put off reading Invincible. After reading Invincible I pretty much wish Robert Kirkman would devote more time to it.

The Invincible books have really nice binding and feel great after multiple reads, The Walking Dead have similar books.

My friend got me into comics about 8 years ago thanks to Invincible. The first 13 issues, all wrapped up into this, is a great story on its own. And if you do like it, there's another 100 issues or so out after that.

Most of your answers are listed in the Amazon pages. So if you look at the Ultimate editon it is 13 issues and in the product details it says it is 400 pages, 11.2 x 7.6 x 1.2 inches, and 3.2 pounds. All of them are well put together and good quality and rest is determined by you. I have the Ultimate one and I ma fine with it, but my gf finds larger ones bulky and harder to read. So if looking for the most for you buck then look at number of pages or issues per book and figure out which is the best buy for that price. If you don't like larger/heavier then the product details will show dimensions and weight and it comes to your personal tastes on if you like them larger or smaller or don't care.
