This is what I got. It's gloss. Already rode it through a couple rainstorms, it's holding up great so far!

I was trying to find a matte finish yellow spray paint bottle in the store, but all I could find was gloss. I ended up choosing the Kyrlon 'bonds to plastic' yellow (amazon link). If I had bought the paint online I might have found one.

Anyway my method to doing this was a bit out of the ordinary and removing the 'mask' was a bit of a tough issue at the end.

The steps are as follows:

  1. Remove the grey / green rubber padding. It's a bit tough so don't be too afraid.

  2. Make sure any probes are disconnected, and the meter is set to off.

  3. Find a plastic bag. One you usually get from any grocery store with your bought products in and put the hard multimeter body into it. Wrap it tight and make either a knot or a bun with the excess of the plastic bag above the multimeter dial to allow the rubber cover to come back on. (i.e. Put the multimeter in the bag, hold the bag as normal and spin the multimeter. The bag will become tight around it and form a sort of knot or bun!) Secure any openings and loose hanging bits with tape.

  4. With the multimeter wrapped in a plastic bag, without any holes in the bag, put the rubber cover / accent back on the multimeter. Do not tightly secure the rubber cover! Allow it to sit somewhat loosely in the position it would normally be which is still a bit tight.

  5. Paint! Best to do this outside in the warm sun while letting it soak 15-20 minutes and shaking the can vigorously for about a minute in between coats. Start with very light coats side to side - never start your spray on the object you're spraying! Always spray in the air and move the can across side to side until you're spraying in the air again. This is crucial otherwise you will get paint drips which you won't be able to fix. I started to put on a slightly heavier coat on coat #3, total of approximately 8 coats for most even outcome.

  6. After letting the last coat dry for >2 hours, start gently cutting away at the edges of the plastic bag cover. You will get paint flakes from the plastic bag all over the place so do this somewhere you wont mind getting messy. This process is a bit tricky to do without moving the rubber cover much, but you can pull all the leftover plastic bag out of the crevices if you cut correctly.

  7. Done!

I chose my plastic bag method, because I was afraid the paint would take a long time to try and possibly get heavily worn right away in having to put the bendy rubber pad back on the multimeter with force.
