I'm looking into geting one for my parents, who have a hopeless number of remotes for their television.

I use this, though I got mine for $20 though.
It works pretty great, you can either download a preset remote, or create your own layout. And anything your remote can do, this little device can do it as well. I used it to consolidate all my remotes into one. Now I use it with my old iPod touch to control my TV, Xbox, and stereo, as well as my friends TV's.
I ended up putting a little piece of velcro on the side of my headboard to hold my iPod touch there (as it already had velcro on it since I used to use that method to affix it to my motorcycle when I rode so I could choose music, etc.., while still riding). And I put a small piece on the remote so even when I'm not using them together, I won't use the tiny transmitter.
