Lowest Amazon price is $493 (or $375 from a 3rd party seller). The MSRP is obviously inflated but this seems like a good price regardless. Definitely considering going in on this deal since it has FreeSync and USB-C

These are the main ones I saw other than the 2 that Apple sells

My current workstation is an LG 27" USB-C 4k monitor hooked up to my macbook. I have one cord to plug in for charging and 4k 60hz video, and the monitor has USB ports on the back for my peripherals. It's perfect.

Plus, the macbook is so small it can hide on the back of the monitor in a 3d printed bracket.

Did you have PC and/or Game mode enabled on your TV? That cuts the input lag by 2/3. If it's feel you're looking for, response time isn't going to have a big impact. The only thing it affects is motion blur and your TV has far lower response than any monitor you'll find, see the link to the review I sent, because it's OLED. Any decent monitor should have good enough response rate. 4ms is great.

Displaylag.com rates both TVs and monitors. Click the second link I sent and you'll see filtering options up top. Select 4k under HD Res and then in the Display drop-down you have different types of displays, i.e. TV, Freesync Monitor, G-Sync monitor, etc. All of the 4k monitors they've rated have around 10-11ms input lag which is about 1/2 that of your TV.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the frame rate can affect the feel of the game in a similar fashion to input lag. If you have access to any monitor with input lag in the range you're looking for hook your Xbox/PS4/whatever up to that and see how it feels vs your TV. Try to play a game that's 30fps and one that's 60fps. That way you know how much of what you feel is from the monitor/TV and how much is from the frame rate.

Hope that helps. I'm using one of these for my monitor and I love it. I still have my PCs and consoles hooked to my TVs for when I want some 4k action. Looks like there are some good 4k options available now. These both look pretty good with 10ms input lag. Good luck finding a monitor you like!

edit: Forgot to mention, avoid G-Sync as others have mentioned. It jacks the price up big time and you won't be able to use it unless you're connecting to a PC with an Nvidia card.

edit2: Damn you displaylag and your affiliate links! Replaced those with regular Amazon links.

I need to get several monitors for "work" and are wondering what people think about the following mix:

  • ~six LG 31MU97C's and LG 34UC87M-B's for three 15" Retina MacBook Pro's (late 2013, late 2014, late 2015);
  • a couple LG UltraFine 5K Display's for a late 2013 Mac Pro (I know that they run at 4K on the Mac Pro and may not turn on at boot, but I like the look...);
  • a LG 27UD88-W for a late 2015 MacBook.

If i recall correctly this LG is the one i went with.

Any that offer usb-c charging will work as long as it supplies enough power (I forgot the minimum amount for this laptop).

Then I just taped a cheap little USB to the back of it to expand its number of ports so I can run all my peripherals off the monitor. I'm quite happy with it.

Price went up lately, but if you see past prices with keepa.com you'll see that they did cost the same.

Also the Ultrafine is on sale until 31st december, so later the apple offering will be even higher

Also the lower priced LGs should have the same 4K IPS panel, but less other stuff (es. no usb-c etc.) but cost far less, like this: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B01LBQ3QCA/

With that budget, you’ll easily find lots of options. Such as this one LG 4K UHD 27UD88-W 27" LED-Lit Monitor with USB Type-c

It charges and connects to a laptop all over one simple usb C cable. The display is also very accurate and a pleasure to use with web and graphic design.

u/blacktian · 1 pointr/AppleWhatShouldIBuy

Yes you can use a adaptor for it. I've no experience with it, but this seems to be a good option?

There are also some monitors that support charging your Macbook. So you have only one cable going to your monitor, which is used for the display and powering your Macbook.
>LG’s 27UD88-W is a 27″ USB-C-enabled display. Its USB-C port allows MacBook owners to connect a single cable to drive the display, charge the machine, and facilitate data transfer.

u/meinkomfort · 1 pointr/PS4

Thanks for your prompt response. :) But to be honest I prefer a monitor over tv due to streaming on Twitch. With PS4 Pro it can stream 1080p/30fps on Twitch(?) and youtube. Now I am looking to purchase this monitor for my PS4 Pro:27UD88-W What do you guys think? Yay or nay?

u/Drum127 · 1 pointr/applehelp

The display that /u/mo4fun was referencing does, but it is still quite pricey, albeit it does seem like a great monitor.

With the 2016 MacBook Pro line essentially confirmed to have 4 USB-C ports, I think I might hold out then get one of them, along with a USB-C enabled display like this.

u/socialwill · 1 pointr/Surface

The LG mention had me look at what other monitors they sell and I cam across this LG 27UD88 - http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-27UD88-W-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B01CDYB0QS?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

More than the Dell or LG mentioned, but I am guessing this is because it is a newer screen. I do like the near zero bezel design that LG has, and some newer Dell's have this as well.

u/cjohn4043 · 1 pointr/mac

That's good! I'm not considering the UltraFine displays, but I have been looking at [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CDYB0QS/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IKPBM6NDFHHMV&colid=I1OSZXHLO4BA). I may be using it for my PS4 and a possible future gaming PC if I come around to build one.

u/drewnick · 1 pointr/Dell

I wanted the cleanest possible solution, so I bought a LG 27UD88-W 27-Inch 4K UHD IPS Monitor which just has a single USB-C cable to the XPS 13 (or any other laptop w/ USB-C). This provides power/charges the laptop and receives 4K video back. Also provides to USB ports on the back of the monitor.

I love this setup. Monitor is under $600.

Hi. These computer recommendations are fine, /u/deathaddict 's is pretty solid, though i'd spec 64GB of RAM

That being said, I don't like the monitor choices presented. One of the suggestions here isn't even an IPS monitor, that's bad. I would suggest not using an Asus monitor for editing. Dell or LG make fantastic work station and editing monitors that are much nicer to use than Asus.

I'm not sure how serious you are about editing, if you're professional or not. When it comes to computers i'm a fan of overkill in the build, so if you can swing it the LG 31MU97 is the best you can do on a reasonable budget. Full Adobe RGB and sRGB coverage along with 97% of the DCI-P3 colorspace. Though it is not good for gaming.

I am also a fan of the LG 27UD88-W if you need something cheaper and also want to game consistently.

Even less expensive is the Dell P2715Q, this one is only 8bit but it does a great job in the price range. I use one for my photo work, which is web based so it's fine for me. If I were printing I would buy something better, and 10bit.

I havent used it, but the BenQ BL2711U is apparently very good for its price, too.
Hope this helps!

:EDIT:

After some reading the The Asus PB279Q listed in a comment looks good on paper, actually. But I have yet to use an Asus display that didn't have a weird mesh sheen inside of the panel, it's tough to describe. It really messes up the way whites look and i'm not a fan. Maybe this one doesn't have that, but I can't be sure.

I would recommend seeking out computer stores that have the monitors i've listed in this post and looking at them before you buy. That's the easiest way to make an informed decision!
