The Troy Rising trilogy.

These two I recently read and enjoyed;

Three World Collide A short story about a human space ship encountering two very different aliens for the first time. Probably the best example I've read of how different aliens can be to humans and how we can deal with these differences.

Troy Rising by John Ringo A trilogy of books. It probably won't be considered a classic but it was very entertaining to read. It takes place in the near future where aliens make first contact and place a large "stargate" in orbit. The second aliens become trading partners and the third are more hostile.

No because I've saved up a maple syrup supply.

Also by sheer weight of numbers one of these days they will launch one ICBM by accident and flatten a city and then nobody will be laughing, not even the aliens.

I haven't read an actual book in quite some time.

I quite enjoyed Live Free or Die and the other 2 books in that series. I just wish the author would finish the series. Author's written a bunch of military sci-fi, most of which I've enjoyed, but he's got at least 3 series that I'm waiting for the next book on.

As already suggested, Scalzi's Old Man's War would fit. Alternatively, John Ringo's Troy Rising series, starting with Live Free or Die is both entertaining and quite similar to the ME series.

Well they dont "Completely" focus on social and political effects, they are touched on and shown.

"Posleen War Series" AKA. The Legacy of Aldenata Series.
Starts with A Hymn Before Battle

The series is longish and has a definite Military Sci-fi bent.

"Troy Rising Series" Starts with

Live Free or Die

Again has Military Sci-Fi bent (Hell its the authors trademark imho.) but it does have some interesting things happening.

Hmm....I'm going to interpret that question as '10 Books in No Particular Order that Weren't Massive Bestsellers that I Loved*'

  • The Good Women of China An amazing book about the struggles of women in China from 1950s-1980s.

  • Ode to Kirihito The book that got me hooked on Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy)'s classic manga.

  • Shades of Milk and Honey A Regency Romance with a touch of fantasy, and the writing is a pleasure.

  • Ender's Game Hardly indie anymore, but I found this near the bottom of a pile of books in middle school, thus launching my love of SF/F

  • A Man with No Talents An anonymous account of a man who dropped out of the Salaryman life and became free to live his life as he wanted.

  • The Dancing girls of Lahore A brutal, honest account of the underworld of courtesans in Pakistan.

  • The Legend of Eli Monpress Escapist fantasy with amazing characters and a plot that keeps the reader up well past bedtime.

  • Off to Be the Wizard Probably the closest to 'indie' on here, hardly a deep book but a hilarious geeky romp.

  • Live Free or Die This one surprised me a bit, but my Libertarian SF-loving self just fell head-over-heels for this series.

  • Boneshaker Because dammit, this is the one that sent me down the Steampunk rabbit hole.
