okay first things first...

if you can get the slipcase version, go for it. if you can spend a little extra, i highly recommend the master editions, vol. 1, vol. 2, and vol. 3 here. they are originally $50 so if you pick them up at your local comic shop you'll be paying $150... but if you have that special someone gifting it to you via amazon and you have some patience, you can get them at $35/ea, $105 total + shipping/tax.

these are technically omnibuses; each master edition is actually two paperback volumes. omnibus vol. 1 is vol. 1 and 2... etc. i mention these special master editions because you get a lot of fun extras like artwork and separate hardcover art that doesn't exist anywhere else. geeking out aside, if you can only get the slipcase for whatever reason, you'll still get the complete story.

lastly,

locke and key is a linear story, meaning you need to start at issue #1. fortunately it is complete, so whatever you end up picking up is everything that is available. unfortunately we all want more issues, haha! i think this small world issue is simply a fun side tale and a revisit to the world of locke and key!
