I am an electrician. What might be happening is the dimmer switch has gone bad. You say when you tap the switch against the ground you see sparks. That could either be your wire somehow losing contact with the fuse you are jumping and then regaining it or there is something else in the electronics that is going bad.

Did you hit the switch with the plastic cover off? If you are careful you may be able to see where it's coming from.

Anyway. I would replace that dimmer switch. Here is one from amazon, but you might be able to get one from your local hardware.

I'm not sure if this one has a fuse, but it would be a good idea to have it, you wouldn't want it to start any fires.
By checking the ikea website, It said it uses a Chandelier bulb E12 Max 40W. First, you cannot use an energy efficient bulb. It has to be an incandescent. Also. I dunno if there are more than one bulbs to this lamp, it seems not, so you need a relatively small fuse...
By OHMS LAW
{Amperage of needed fuse} = {Power or Wattage of Bulb (again max 40 Watts)} / {Voltage (standard American electrical outlet is 120 Volts)}
A=40/120, .33333 or one third of an amp.
So I would guess what is in there is a one amp to two amp fuse.
I would put this inline with the new dimmer. That way if it blows again, you would have easy access to change it. But beware, make sure no kids can really get at it, maybe it can be put on the inside of the lamp.

Hope that helps.

We have both, and I would recommend the Hitachi Magic Wand. It's intimidating at first, but then it quickly becomes the greatest thing ever invented. I would suggest getting a lamp cord dimmer switch for it (I used this cord connected to this lamp dimmer and it's served me VERY well). It lets you have a better level of control over the power level of the wand.

I cut the cord and installed an inline dimmer (https://i.imgur.com/XoHxpll.jpg), makes for fewer cords and keeps the control closer to the wand, even when you use an extension cord to add length. I picked mine up on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Lutron-LC-300H-WH-Attache-On-Cord-Dimmer/dp/B0000BYEF9) but it looks like they are no longer available there.

We have had no issues with this setup and it's been about 4 years now. She loves the extra control it gives her, previously there was just the 2 speeds to choose from; "holy cow", and "way too much". I know newer models have better options but this was a cheap upgrade for us.

Don't use that one. Don't cut off any ground pins.

Use this instead.

Not a new toy, but for your Hitachi - get an inline lamp dimmer, like this. Now she can make it as soft or powerful as she likes. Hope it helps!
