I love this game. I've been playing it for years and it's still fun. I'm playing the Jags right now, Bortles has all the NFL records, and is handing off to Sankey (who also has a shit ton of records). Got Odell and Mike Evans running some beautiful routes for me too. Highly recommend :)

Oh my bad dude they pulled it down for the time being but you can check on it every once in a while to see if it comes back. I got mine in November.

I just came back up out of the rabbit hole. Here's the skinny as I interpreted it.

• NFL2K5 on PC was just the Playstation 2 version of the game running on the PCSX2 emulator. It had lots of support up to 2013, then it dropped off significantly.
  
  
• Madden NFL 08 is the new platform of choice for mods/roster updates. It is the actual PC game, so it runs natively (takes advantage of your PC hardware), and allows for deeper customization (like uniforms, graphical improvements etc.) beyond just roster updates.
  
  
• You can buy a digital download of Madden NFL 08 for PC legitimately from Amazon for $10.

Everything you need is here. People are constantly updating rosters. I suggest to start off with the FF XIV mod which updates uniforms, rosters, etc.

Some other great mods include the Heisman 14 mod (college football) and the Leatherheads mod.

I use an Xbox 360 controller and its basically plug in and go. All the buttons are automatically programmed, you just still need a mouse to navigate the menus

Here's my suggestion to you. Get a copy of Madden 08 for PC for 9.99 at Amazon. This is the last Madden game made for PC, but don't fret because it's actually one of the best they made.

Now for the best part. Because 08 is the last PC release there's actually a very active modding community still going for it. That means that you can easily download up to date rosters so you aren't stuck with the 2008 ones. Here's a video of them in action with download links in the description. I've used these rosters personally and they are really good. They include the rookies from the draft last May which is pretty sweet.

Well, there technically is an active, functioning football game you can play on PC, you just have to work a little bit to use it. A very dedicated group of users have been updating Madden 08 (the last edition to release on PC, I believe) ever since EA stopped supporting it. I'm pretty sure this is their main site/forum.

As you can see it is still very active and they even have updated rosters (and uniforms!) for the 2014 season. Now, I have never played this myself (been meaning to, though) so I cannot vouch for its efficacy, but if it were shitty I doubt people would be playing it six years later.

Madden 08 PC version (purchasable on Amazon for $10) with the Heismand 14 mod and the Heisman 14 v4 add-on is probably the best way to go about it. It's not emulation, but Madden 08 is a solid engine to start with for sure, and the community at FootballIdiot is still thriving. Be sure to get texmod and the field texture replacement for college field markers.

I've even playing the PC version with updated team rosters, uniforms, stadiums, etc. for this season's NFL (because screw buying a console for one game).

NHL 09 and Madden 08 are pretty much the only PC options. Madden 08 rosters can be updated to current rosters.
