I got most of it from this informative but horribly un-funny video. You use this spray paint to make it conductive, and then this kit to actually plate. A battery in the kit charges the item and the solution that you paint on has metal ions taken out by the current. Along with some accessories I spent a little over $100.

I've heard Super Shield works well as a conductive coating prior to plating. I have a can, plus all the supplies (nickel, bath, electrolyte, power supply) but haven't had a chance to try it for real yet.
