We have a couple of kids around that age we're buying for this year.
We decided to get a Minecraft Mini Figure Collector Case and a half dozen Minecraft Mini Figure Mystery Boxes.
The Mystery Boxes can be found at the checkout stand at Walmart, so we buy them now and then. The case is a nice way for them to organize and store them.

A note on the mystery boxes. There are several different series, in different color boxes. We purchased a mixture of them.
I've got a pretty good collection of the little figures but I like them out of the box so I can design and then re-arrange things in the collection box.
