I don't use skype, but I'm guessing you need something like this, the microphone should be central to the room.

There aren't many true wide angle webcams out there, I would pick the widest available and move it back enough to get everyone in the shot. The mic is the most important part and I found this model to work well, even in large conference rooms.

Yah, it depends on what you want to do in the long run. I work with AV (analog and digital) and now I'm writing applications for it. I tested Ubiquiti cameras (my first choice, as they're inexpensive, the dome cams have a wide field of view and a decent mic built in) but they modify their streaming from standard (so that you can mostly only use the cameras with their own NVR's unless you really don't mind unsynched video/audio). I also worked with a couple of Axis cameras. I really wanted to get Foscams as well -- for exactly the reasons you listed -- but I kept reading about a batch of new ones that had problems and I was afraid of buying multiple cameras and then having issues (I'm working with batches of four).

One of the biggest reasons that I like the RPi (for the particular project that I'm working on currently) is that I found a USB conference mic that works very well with it and so I have outstanding audio and video that is easily synchable from the same camera.

Wait, are you all recording in a single room? If so I would suggest something like a conference microphone if that's how you want to continue recording.

Something like this could be useful, but it is quite expensive: http://www.amazon.ca/MXL-AC-404-Conference-Boundary-Microphone/dp/B001TGTDFM

Personally I use OBS, but FRAPS is perfectly fine!

I'd try using two MXL AC404's first, it is a surprisingly good microphone for $65. It may be all you need.

I think you're over estimating how much room a desk mic takes up.

I have an admittedly pricey conference room mic that sits in the base on my monitor. My mic doesn't take up any additional room that wasn't already taken and it basically completely disappears. I have never once worried about its positioning or had pick up issues.

Here's the one I have:

I bought it in February of 2014 so it's 3 years old now and showing exactly 0 signs of age. Since it sits up at my monitor it also doesn't contribute to my cable mess on the desk, only behind which doesn't matter.

And I also have a set of Beyerdynamic DT990s that I bought in March of 2011.

So they're running 6 years old now. They aren't showing 0 signs of wear after 2 moves and several trips to quakecon but they still work just fine and are in great shape, no need to replace them at all. I did anyway at home but still use them at work. Spent 30 bucks and got a new set of ear pads and they feel like new again.

So between the two I've spent 300 dollars over the course of 6 years and both parts are still going strong. Doesn't seem like a bad deal to me.

Having a solid desktop mic means you can get whatever set of headphones your want without being limited to shitty gaming headsets.

A couple of reasons. I just got this mic to pick up sound in larger rooms and for when I am streaming board game nights on Twitch. Because my OBS is acting up (I've tried just about everything to try and fix it) I'm doing a work around by making my Mic play through my speakers and so far it works like a charm with no issues. My only problem is that I cannot mute this new microphone in a timely manner. Plus this mic is the only one I've been able to find that can pic up audio in a large room without costing an arm and a leg. I used several of these at a convention recently and I was able to pick up every voice in a roughly 20x20 room without having any issues hearing individuals.

Also I've been in situations where I would like to use additional mics, but I can't with my current setup without there being a lot of noise (I have older devices), so the additional channels help.

And last thing is that I want a USB output because I believe all of my mic inputs on my PC (I have 2) create noise or are broken.

To be honest I'm considering just getting a separate "stream only" PC just to fix half of these issues lol.

I just bought this MXL AC404 microphone.

It looks nice and clean, and picks up sound very well. I keep it under my monitor on my desk, unobtrusive, and my Borderlands buddy has no trouble hearing me.

i'm not sure if it's prime eligible, but this thing says free shipping. and it's way below 100$.

I use this one. It's good if you have a closed room. It can pick up a lot of ambient noise if the sensitivity is too high though. I like it, none of my friends have complaints about background noise.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know a decent bit about headphones, but I feel very lost with loudspeakers. There seems to be much more that can be wrong to make them sound shitty. Can you recommend software for the frequency measurement your suggested? I have a decent mic, not sure if that would be accurate enough to help.

The general consensus seems to be that they're just shitty speakers. That's fine I guess, as they didn't cost me anything. It's just bugging me because I think they sound even worse than they should. My parents had Fisher speakers similar to these, and they never sounded anywhere near this bad. Maybe theirs were from the 70s, I think Fisher was better back then.

What kind of mic? I've been nearly paralyzed with indecision.

There's the blue snowball and blue snowball ice, which are commonly used, but I'm concerned about the direction-sensitive reception. I don't want the microphone to have to stand in front of the monitor and block my view just to pick up my voice. The former option has an omnidirectional mode, which may solve this issue, but I don't know.

Then there's the MXL AC404 conference mic, which a friend of mine has. That's omnidirectional only, but apparently works pretty well, but it is also the most expensive of the three.

Ideas?
