You're correct that are not very accurate in measuring correctly body fat %.
Having said that a few months ago after quite a bit or research and some posts/comments in here I purchases this scale at Amazom, and this is why: while it is also inaccurate, it's constantly inaccurate; therefore it will tell me exactly enough whether I am losing or gaining body fat.

Scale measures body fat, water, bone density, and muscle mass. These are not 100% accurate but are close enough to help me out.
