Grab the upcoming omnibus
edition collecting 12 issues for a very low price (assuming your friend's
birthday is after the publication date of November 4, that is).
Otherwise you have to get the comics volume by volume, which is rather
more expensive (these trade paperbacks are more expensive than average,
but they do use slightly better paper, and there's glitter on the
cover).

show
Might have a problem there, because the comics do assume
knowledge of the show. Volume 1 is the return of Queen Chrysalis, and
Volume 2 is about Nightmarity. You might want to get Pony Tales vol. 1
and 2 instead, which are collection of one-shots that require less
background knowledge. I personally recommend volume
2 -
the four issue (CMC, Celestia, Spike and Luna) it collects are better
than the Mane 6 ones in volume 1 (Fluttershy and Twlight's issue were
bad)
There are! Here's volume one, and volume two!
There the volumes set, covering entire story :

Well, not all at once, but there are paperbacks collecting the individual comics:
For the sake of completeness, there's also an omnibus, which also collects the main series, but is the equivalent of 3(?) of the regular paperbacks I mentioned above.
Finally, if you don't want/need physical books, they're also available on the Comixology app, I believe.
I hope that helps!
