What kind of cable are you using? I tried my regular USBC charging cables for the mbxp as well as my phone...they both produced very inconsistent speeds.
I bought this and got over 800mb/s consistently!

The posts in this thread are confusing me greatly. Proprietary? Too expensive? A 1.5ft thunderbolt 3 cable is $20. You could use a longer thunderbolt cable, but for the full 40Gbs bandwidth it must be an active cable, and then it will only have thunderbolt functionality (won't work as a plain ol' USB 3.1 gen1/2 cable, and I don't think displayport-alternate mode would work either). Depending on your use case you might only need 20Gbs of bandwidth- dual 4k@60Hz screens definitely need 40Gbs.
If your original question was "can I use a USB type-C to Displayport cable to connect to the docking station?" the answer is no. You need to use a USB type-C to USB type-C thunderbolt 3 cable of some sort (either 20Gbs or 40Gbs).
