Hickman's the man...man. I jumped into buying floppies with New Avengers. It ties into the events occurring in Avengers, as they're both written by Hickman. They'll also tie into the Infinity event in August.

New Avengers is my favorite book. It's the larger concepts with more of an impact since it's the Illuminati trying to save the world from being destroyed. I'm not too impressed with the regular Avengers run by comparison, it's a bit scatter-brained and not too rewarding.

My advice is to read Illuminati if you haven't (optional), then read New Avengers #1-3. They'll give you a feel for how they read and what the plot is. This guy is selling digital codes for them $3 PayPal. #8 just came out today.

Enjoy!

You're right in that the Skrulls have been coming here for they're own reasons (aka plot device) for a looong time. But, normally, its been a handful of infiltrators, maybe a small armada. Secret invasion is way worse, because of how deeply we were penetrated. The skrulls found a way to hide PERFECTLY from everything. And it's all thanks to the Avengers: Illuminati

The Skrulls were reeling from another defeat in an assault on Earth. Their King was demanding answers from his science and general types, they were shrugging and looking sheepish. Then in a burst of purple light, the Avengers Illuminati was brought in.

  1. Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, Head of the Avengers, current leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  2. Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, Head of the Fantastic Four, possibly smartest man on Earth
  3. Blackagar Boltagon (no, seriously), aka Black Bolt, King of the Inhumans
  4. Dr. Stephen Strange, aka Dr. Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme
  5. Professor Charles Xavier, aka, Professor X, Leader of the X-Men
  6. King Namor Mckenzie, The Sub-Mariner, King of Atlantis

So this dream team of good guys teleports into the skrull kings throne room and says "Hey, don't come back or we'll beat you harder!" Skrull king is like "Make Me." Black bolt is like "'K"

See, Black Bolt is a silent king, as his voice can destroy mountains. Or, you know, Royal barges.

As Namor is rejoicing, the crew gets captured and overwhelmed. Any time is a bad time to suddenly become visible, buts it's worse if you're a single space ship in the middle of a hostile Skrull Armada. People tried spinning, but it wasn't a good enough trick and everyone is all unconscious in space.

The audience then gets to have a walkthrough of the special containment the Skrulls rigged up as they studied these 6 as closely as they could. Dismantled Iron Man's armor, Mine-probed Professor X, called in specialists to deal with Strange, whole nine yards. See, they were looking for something. They found it, but we learn what that is years later.

Iron man is just a Tony Stark in a cell. Sitting naked. The door opens and there's Avengers! But its a trick. Silly shapeshifting Skrulls! Iron Man is smart even without pants! They couldn't come to rescue us, 'cuz we told no one about this! Iron Man whispers a thanks to Captain America (the real one, not the shapeshifter whose nose he's beating in) for all the fighting lessons. Then he frees everyone, they steal a ship and head home.

The rest of [this TPB] (https://www.amazon.com/New-Avengers-Brian-Michael-Bendis/dp/0785124373) (warning, buying comics is addictive) has some fun stories, but its the first and last issues are the ones for this story. Marvel Civil War has just gone down (the first one, apparently), Captain America is dead (ATM) and basically, everything sucks. And Tony has called a meeting of the Illuminati, sitting alone in a decrepit warehouse with a sealed body bag in front of him. Tensions are high as one by one, the illuminati shows up and shows they're not completely trusting each other. There's an argument about the body bag. Inside: A [Skrull wearing Electra's Costume] (https://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/0/40/259395-49456-elektra.gif) (It just occurred to me I could be linking pictures, but I don't have it digital and google isn't being very nice.)

"So dead Electra Skrull? So what? Her movie wasn't great, why should we care?" says deadpool. Okay, not really. But the "Why should we care?" sentiment is there. The problem is that according to Dr. Strange who was on scene in Japan with the Secret Avengers, Electra's Skrully-ness was undetectable by Wolverine's Sense, Dr. Strange's Magic, or even Spiderman's infamous Arachnid Sense. Her disguise was perfect. What we gonna do?

The general consensus is, of course, to do a bunch of analysis, figure out how to fight it, when [BlackBolt Speaks up.] (https://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/11112/111122629/3369354-9087690587-33693.jpg)

Uh-oh. Turns out he was a Skrull! Big fight, might of damaged Prof. X's new working legs, but basically, the skrulls are entirely undetectable. Iron Man's armour couldn't suss it out, nor could Professor X who was actively mind-scanning BB as he acts as a mind-to-speech translator at these meetings.

With no one able to trust ANYBODY, the group splits up. And I dunno, fight a few wars that span the whole of the series. That is basically the story, but we need to go back. Roll back the clock to that first strike on the Skrulls, when they were captured. What WERE they looking for?

This leads to a different pair of TPB, Volumes 8 and 9 of the New Avengers. (Of which, Number 9 is apparently not on my shelf which disturbs me). In it, we learn that what the Skrulls got was all the information they needed to make their disguises complete, as well as clone off a "with memories" version of Reed Richards any time they wanted. They could tune their shape change to be invisible to Iron Man's tech, Dr. Strange's Magics, Professor X's mentals. In fact, there was a scene in the book I can't find ATM that had them re-cloning Richards again and again, until they found a tactic that tricked him into doing the thinking for us. I mean, them. Yeah, them.

So, TLDR, don't read comics, they're addictive. Yes the Skrulls would have kept attacking Earth, but if it wasn't for the Illuminati trying to act all macho and getting caught, Secret Invasion couldn't have happened.

Oh, and a parting side-note, there is a few lines in Skull conversation about why Earth is important. Turns out there were some prophecies about this huge guy with a big Purple G on his belt (Photo) He would destroy the Skrull world if they didn't do something about/with this pale blue dot of a planet, whose walking apes still thought digital watches were a pretty neat idea. Of course, instead of asking for help, they tried to conquer us. But it turns out that we're really really good at beating him back. In fact, in the distant future, All-Father Thor fought him Mano-y-mano. You know, because. (please note, the part of Thor's Arm is being played by the Left arm of The Destroyer. You know, because)

Thanks for asking this, btw! It gave me a chance to do a big long retelling, as well as pulling out some dusty books I haven't read in a while. And remember, comics are addictive and if you read them , you might be disappointed by what ends up on the silver screen (although you may catch more easter eggs.)

Doctor Strange

The only background you might want for Superior Spider-Man is the last arc of Amazing Spider-Man, issues #698-700, which are collected in Amazing Spider-Man: Dying Wish. After that, just start with Superior Spider-Man #1.

With Avengers, you don't really need any background. With New Avengers, you might want to read the story New Avengers: Illuminati first to familiarize yourself with the group.

You do not need any background to start Daredevil and Hawkeye. They are very self-contained books. You can also pick up Thor: God of Thunder starting from issue #1 and know exactly what is going on, no problem.

Hope that helps!

I would at least read The New Avengers: Illuminati mini-series that comes before it
