Yes, it is backwards compatible. You DO need a Wiimote however, and probably a nunchuck (thats the name of the joystick attachment) but i'm sure that can be fixed.

The game pad turns off when you switch to Wii mode.
You will need the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuck to play the classic Wii games but, the classic Wii remote will work as well if you already own that. In addition, I'd also recommend grabbing a classic controller if you plan on playing Wii games like Super Smash Bros Brawl as the Wii U Pro Controller will not work.
There is an official forum list here of compatible external hard drives, but I haven't put much of a dent in mine yet so, you may want to hold off.
Typical file sizes for older SNES games seem to be in the 20-30 MB range.

I don't remember if it came with any, or how many, because I bought it at launch. But really, Wiimotes are all you need for multiplayer. Those and games.
This new version of a wiimote would really help encourage me to wii dance more (and be less frustrated when it lies about whether I did a move) as well as we would have two wiimotes so I could play with my BF! =D

You don't get 2 gamepads, you get a different controller for 2 players! You can use a wiimote (which you may already have), or a Pro controller for this.
