It's not. There's just a lot of shitty olive oil and shitty information out there. This stuff is between 10 and 11 bucks at my local grocery store. It qualifies because it has a low acidity and shouldn't smoke below 405F. It's not super robust or anything, and I'll get fancier stuff for more flavor when I want it. I also use that stuff more sparingly and in simpler preparations, where I can really taste it.

That being said, serious eats did an article and claimed they didn't notice any flavor problems when cooking with olive oil. Chefs do it all the time.
