We can easily do that for $1k. If you don't care too much about having it sound great you can get Pioneer speakers, an Onkyo receiver, and two BIC subwoofers. Total cost is about $700. You could get more of those Pioneer speakers if you want surround sound, or a third subwoofer for even more bass and still stay under $1k.

For better sound quality get a single subwoofer from Rhythmik or SVS. The downside is that you'll have chest thumping bass instead of earth shattering. You could also get a Cerwin Vega sub which would be a good compromise between sound quality and power.

That Yamaha receiver is pretty great, especially for the price. The improvement in sound processing, and new-found connectivity will shine well over any discernible difference in the amplification.

I've switched from some higher end 10-12 year old receivers from Yamaha, NAD, and Pioneer Elite to This similarly priced modern receiver. The Audyssey room EQ made my speakers sound better than an older $1200 Yamaha flagship, or even the NAD T-763. I use the Onkyo to drive my Bower & Wilkins FPM4s with the B&W PV1 Sub.

Go new, and get one with something like Audyssey, or other room EQ capabilities. Barring speakers with high amplification needs, or a need for very high, sustained volumes, you won't be bothered by the amplification.

This is what I would do for some decent background music if it were my joint...

• 7 Channel Receiver with Zone 2 line out. I don't know how big the place actually is, so if more speakers are needed hook up a 5 Channel Receiver to the Zone 2 line out for a total of 12 speakers.

However, I prefer stereo to surround. I'd much rather have two fantastic speakers than 5 cheap ones. Your front speakers are the most important aspects of any system (surround or not), so going stereo and adding surround to it guarantees you have a great base to build around. I'd recommend:
