/u/leafyleif - with your budget, I would avoid the Canons because they are limited to 1080p ([here] (https://youtu.be/J4FDn8YX4Ao) is why you want to shoot 4K and [here] (https://youtu.be/kIf9h2Gkm_U) is why material originated at 4K looks better on 1080p monitors than material originated at 1080p).

I would also avoid the two 4K cameras on your list. The [Panasonic X1000] (https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-HC-X1000-Professional-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B00MZCCNPG//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) because of its tiny sensor and the [Sony Z150] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-PXWZ150-4K-XDCAM-Camcorder/dp/B01CYWWVVM//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) because it will cost you more than $3000.

In your budget range, there are a couple of large sensor, 4K professional camcorder options - one with a fixed, power zoom lens and the other with an interchangeable lens mount.

Option One

For [$1999, you can get a Sony PXW-X70] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-PXWX70-HD422-Camcorder-3-5-Inch/dp/B00NPAJH8I/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20) with a 12x power zoom lens.

The X70 is a professional camcorder with a 10-bit 4:2:2 broadcast codec, a power zoom lens, dual card slots, SDI out and a top handle.

It also has a relatively large 1" sensor (for shallower depth of field than the small sensor Canon and Panasonic camcorders on your list) and an upgrade path to 4K resolution (with a [$478.19 4K software upgrade] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Upgrade-License-PXW-X70-Bundle/dp/B01GEX9QYM//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20)).

Here is the image quality this camera can produce after the 4K upgrade (please watch at 2160p and your monitor's highest resolution):

For your use I would recommend going with the Panasonic X1000. You'll get additional professional video features like the ND filters (especially good for shooting outdoors) and the XLR inputs for microphones. The GH5 is commonly recommended, and it's a great camera, but people use it more for cinematic shots.

Amazon search returns this.

Affordable if you can spend $2,500.

Honest question—if this is your shooting style, why are you shooting with a DSLR? It looks from the photos that you’re working really hard to turn a DSLR into a news gathering, over-the-shoulder video camera like a Canon XF305 or something:

If you’re a big Panasonic fan (like I am), there are several options as well, including the 4K
HC-X1000

I’m not saying any of this to be snarky or anything—it just seems like you’re trying really hard to turn a camera that very specifically not a “run and gun” type camera when there are camera out there that have great picture quality, great auto focus, feature XLR inputs and level controls and mounts for external shotgun mics, etc. that don’t require a cage or a ton of workaround.

Don’t get me wrong, the GH5 is a great camera (it’s why I own one), but if I was mainly doing run and gun work, I never would have bought a GH5. There are hundreds ENG cameras or even prosumer camcorders that just seem like they’d allow you to capture your images at the same quality in an all-in-one package.

There seems to be this weird shaming of people sometimes around not using a DSLR, but it really doesn’t make sense. It’s about having the right camera for the work you do. If I was making a living doing ENG work or filming weddings or events (or anything where lightning-fast autofocus is a necessity), I would NEVER use my GH5 as my primary camera. To each their own, but I’d just recommend really evaluating what you’re using your camera for and if you have the best tool rig for the job.

Hi /u/mitchgibb and /u/vanulovesyou -

Good choice. I've been recommending the [$2299 Sony PXW-X70] (http://www.adorama.com/SOPXWX70.html?KBID=66297) to DSLR shooters who are tired of lugging around external recorders, screw-on ND filters and multiple lenses. And with its 1" sensor, it will deliver shallower depth of field than a conventional camcorder.

Here is what this camera can do: http://vimeo.com/104434534

The only downside is that you have to wait for the 4K (UHD) upgrade - and we don't know whether or how much Sony will charge for it.

If budget permits, and you don't mind a 1/2" sensor, you might want to consider the [$3499.99 Panasonic HC-X1000] (http://amzn.to/1wCGokC). It will record to true 4096x2160 4K (not just UHD) - and it will do so straight out of the box, no upgrade required.

Here is what this camera can do at 4K (please watch at your monitor's highest resolution):

Hope this is helpful and good luck with your decision!
