My friend's kid turned 6 in May. I got her a $10 jewelry making kit from walmart that had 10,000 beads in it. When she opened the bag she said, "THIS IS WHAT I WANTED MY WHOLE LIFE" and then went home and proceeded to spill them everywhere while making sweet jewelry.

I can't say your kid would like a bead kit, but TONS of kids love crafts and many crafty gifts are cheap. I would suggest something the two of you can do together, like jewelry making, or something like this perler bead bucket get a couple stickon magnets from the craft section and BAM family fun for days.

I don't have an entire collection of colors, but I've already looked and I think I have everything I need. I am not sure about the size. I expect this to be a larger project. I have about 26 boards, though that would be insanely huge. I'm sorry I'm not more helpful in size. I want it to be large enough that the details aren't lost.

I think it's called Perler beads. After you assemble them, you heat them with an iron.

I know those! I used to be obsessed with them as a kid, my Mum still has a drawer full of coasters I made her.

They're little soft plastic beads (cylindrical shaped). They come with a hard plastic mat with evenly spaced spikes on it. You slot the beads on to the little spikes in whatever pattern you want, then stick a put of paper on top and iron it. The heat makes the beads stick together.

You should be able to find them in any toy shop...

It's those little plastic beads that you iron together, like we used to do in girl scouts. Perler beads, apparently.

It's very easy. You assemble the beads on peg boards, place a piece of wax paper on top, and iron them. The kids may even be able to do it themselves, minus the ironing. There's also plenty of patterns to go from, of varying complexity.

Make a giant craft because arts and crafts are cool.

That's the thing, I'm not running it through a pattern generator. I'm not going to a site and ripping a photo pixel for pixel. It's as though I'm using Perler beads to make an approximation. It's like making pixel art patterns with the 8-bit style. The patterns only end up being 50 stitches across in general.

But, given the reaction it seems like this is not a pattern type that's sellable. Noted for the future!

I chew on perler beads to keep myself from biting my nails. It was a lifelong habit, and I needed a couple of nails to play the banjo. It's the only thing that's ever worked for me.

EDIT: Forgot to add that once the nails grew in, I got a fancy emery board thingy and used it a lot. Ragged nail? Sand that shit down, otherwise you'll want to chew it. You have to transfer your biting habit into a fussy maintenance habit.
