I use a comb like this on my boys. I find it gets right down to the undercoat and pulls out the loose stuff as well as any burrs or whatever is stuck in there. It's fine enough I notice any mats right away. A slicker brush is a good secondary tool to use. I'm not a fan of furminators.

My Aussies get a regular all over combing like you do, but I check almost daily the problem spots. For Ozzy, it's mostly his bum fur that turns into dreadlocks. For Korbin, he gets mats in his armpits and ears. They have slightly different fur, so they have slightly different problem areas.

They are especially bad after swimming, so guaranteed combing as soon as they are dry. The swimming seems to push everything towards their tail end, and they get chucks of loose fur above their tail and along their thighs.

Using a blow dryer (especially the higher powered ones) can really help to get out loose fur after a bath.

A conditioner can help with mats. There are lots to choose from. I usually use it just on the problem areas, but it can be used all over.

And you're right to not shave. Not only does it often grow back funny, it's there to insulate and protect them. Aussies have beautiful coats. They should never be shaved.
