I'm still using a Galaxy S4 and about to get my Galaxy S8+

I've had fantastic experiences with Samsung. You see a lot of Touchwiz jokes but I don't understand them, I've never had an issue with it.

I bought a 6,000 mAh battery pack for my S4 about a year ago for like 30 bucks and it's obscenely nice having a phone that will last more than day on a charge.

Good news you could hotswap the batteries out every 30 minutes! Or get one of these bricks with 6000mAh and use it for a reasonable amount of time.

mine too. I bought a Power Bear battery. 6000 mAH. A little heavier but it extends the life of the phone for now.

If the only flaw of the smartphone approach for you is battery life, get some cheap like an old Samsung Galaxy S4 and fit it with an extended battery.

Should be pretty cheap, if you run a stripped down Android OS and only use IR + short-range wifi it should be able to last a few days at minimum.
